Team Venezuela defeated the United States on Tuesday night to claim their first ever World Baseball Classic championship.

Third baseman Eugenio Suárez couldn’t help but give all the credit to God after the incredible win.

“It’s amazing. God is good. All the glory is our Lord, Jesus. He was with us the whole time. We had to glorify, put His name in front of everything,” he told FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. “And nobody believed in Venezuela. But now we win the championship today. And this is a celebration for all the Venezuelan country.”

In the ninth inning, Suárez was given the go-ahead double. When he stood on second-base, he kept thinking of his family and his faith in God.

“They was happy for me. God is good, man. God is good,” he emphasized.

Suárez also talked about the close bond his Venezuelan teammates have with one another.

“We are together the whole time. We not just teammate. We are family,” he declared. “This team is awesome. We are family here. That’s why we play with passion, with love, because we feel that the jersey, we feel our country in front of us. That’s why this is a lot for us as players, as people, as human beings and as Venezuelans. Now we are the champion.”

After Venezuela’s win over Italy in the semifinal, Suárez once again praised God for their success.

“First, God’s been good…I have to glorify His name…We believe in God. We pray every day. We give glory to the one and only, Jesus,” he said in a video shared by sports analyst Jon Root.

Before the World Baseball Classic began, Team Venezuela prayed that they would honor Jesus throughout the tournament.

“Exalt your greatness, Lord, so that the world understands that we are ballplayers, Lord, who honor and glorify your name, Lord, before the whole world,” Suárez prayed as he led his team in prayer, per Christhlete. “May each of us, when we step out, Lord, not be us taking steps but you leaving your mark, Jesus Christ. May our hearts, Lord, reflect the joy you’ve placed in us, Lord; the love of this beautiful game of baseball.”

“You’re the only one who can do it, Lord,” he continued. “And I know you will. In the name of your son, Jesus Christ, you will because you are great and glorious, Lord. Help us, Mighty King. Help us, Mighty King, because we need you to guide our steps, Lord, and give us supernatural strength to move forward, Lord, and lift up the name of our country, Venezuela.”

Team Venezuela beat Team USA 3-2 to secure the country’s first World Baseball Classic championship. Throughout the entire tournament, Venezuela not only wanted to win but also aimed to honor Jesus. It’s safe to say they did both.
