Want to Be a Better Communicator? Here are Priscilla Shirer’s Top Tips

By Movieguide® Contributor

As a professional public speaker, Priscilla Shirer knows all about the importance of being a good communicator.

When she was young, Shirer often got in trouble for talking too much, but, “My dad [always said] it could be that I had a gift of communications,” she said on an episode of the “Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast.”

“I remember him also saying, ‘What if God has given you this ability to communicate? And if you’ll just surrender that to him, that thing that’s getting you in trouble now could actually be the thing that God is going to use for whatever purpose He has in your life,’” she shared.

Shirer explained that trusting in the gifts God has given you is important, even if they don’t always look like gifts at first.

“I think it says a lot about our trust in God that everything doesn’t need to be perfect. Give [young people] the opportunity to…stumble and fall right in the midst of the body of Christ,” she said.

Shirer then shared her tips for being a better communicator.

“An audience is going to remember 10% of what you said, so what is the 10% you want them to glean? Say that over and over again, in different ways,” she said.

Her second tip? Connecting with those around you.

“Your greatest resources are in your relationships, so if you are an island unto yourself, if you’re not taking advantage of the partnerships that God’s going to entrust to you along the way, if you’re burning bridges because of pride…you are actually burning away the resources that God has given you,” Shirer explained. “Most doors that I can see that have been opened for me, it’s because there was a relationship somewhere along the way that was a thread that led to that opportunity.”

She continued, “It literally has been the Lord putting an opportunity in front of me, and the yes or no has been up to me. For example, with WAR ROOM, if I wouldn’t have done it, the impact of WAR ROOM would have happened, with or without me…but I would have missed out on on the gift of being part of something that God was using to serve His purposes and to edify His people.”

A portion of the Movieguide® review for WAR ROOM reads:

WAR ROOM is spiritually and emotionally powerful. Most viewers will cheer at the end. Although it has some minor problems, such as static dialogue and extra subplots, the movie’s jeopardy truly rivets viewers to the storyline. Also, the emotional power of a family struggling with the world, the flesh, the Devil, and God’s Grace helps the movie transcend its defects. Therefore, WAR ROOM is a must-see movie for Christians. MOVIEGUIDE® hopes it will inspire every Christian who sees it to form a deeper, more active and more real prayer life.

Shirer recently teamed up again with the Kendrick Brothers for THE FORGE.

“We’re so excited to have Priscilla back in this movie,” Stephen Kendrick, the movie’s producer, said. “She is a great friend and an amazing woman of God.”

He continued, “She did an awesome job in WAR ROOM, and to come back and reprise the role of Elizabeth Jordan, but to also play Cynthia Wright, her twin sister in the film — that’s a new adventure for us, we’re very excited about it.”

In addition to her work as a public speaker and actress, Shirer is also an author. Her most recent book is called “I Surrender All.”

“From Priscilla Shirer comes this fervent appeal and invitation to surrender everything to Jesus. To follow Him not just as your Savior but as your priority, your first love, your Lord. To move beyond being a believer to becoming His disciple. Because there is a difference,” a description of the book reads. “This book will be impossible to simply read because it beckons you to make a decision about the kind of Christian you will be.”
