Want to Strengthen Your Marriage? Ask This Question

By Movieguide® Contributor

Minister and author Gary Thomas is sharing the one question couples should ask to fortify their marriage.

“I’ve had people come into my office as a pastor [and ask], ‘How do I get him to do that? How do I get her to stop doing this? How do I change this and that?’” Thomas said during an episode of Kirk Cameron’s TAKEAWAYS.

He explained that, instead of focusing on those questions, couples should think about another one.

“Why don’t we do this for God?” Thomas asked. “[It’s] another amazing opportunity for us to strengthen our marriage.”

He added, “When a storm hits, you’re not perfect. Nobody bats a thousand in this,” encouraging couples not to give up at the first sign of trouble.

“You learn to cling to each other, and you come out of it stronger — more in love with God and more in love with each other,” Thomas concluded.

Thomas is the author of many books on how faith can be used to strengthen your marriage.

A description of one of his most popular books, “Sacred Marriage,” reads, “Scores of books have been written that offer guidance for building the marriage of your dreams. Yet, what if God’s primary intent for your marriage isn’t to make you happy…but holy? And, what if your relationship isn’t as much about you and your spouse as it is about you and God? In this popular bestselling book, Gary Thomas uncovers how your marriage can become a doorway to a closer walk with God and each other.”

Thomas also frequently speaks about the changes couples should make if they are seeking a deeper connection.

“I think our view of marriage has to evolve,” he explained. “I’m tired of people thinking that infatuation is the peak of a relationship.”

Thomas continued, “I believe God wants to raise the level of marriages in the church to that of cherish. So the world can define marriage however they want, but when they look at marriages in the church, we have a whole different demonstration of what marriage can be.”
