What Michael W. Smith’s Dad Taught Him About God

What Michael W. Smith’s Dad Taught Him About God

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian artist Michael W. Smith is sharing how his father influenced his relationship with God.

“My dad really taught me what God was like in a lot of ways,” Smith said during an episode of TBN’s PRAISE.

The singer goes into more detail about this relationship in his book, “The Way of the Father: Lessons from My Dad, Truths about God.”

A description of the book reads, “Michael shares how his dad inspired and encouraged him using biblical principles and virtues. Now, Michael passes on these same truths through stories, testimonies, origins of songs, and personal insights from his family life and thirty-five plus years of touring as a Christian artist. He hopes that by sharing his father’s legacy, readers will come to find that no matter who our earthly parents have been in our lives, our Abba Father will never fail us.”

While Smith had a strong relationship with his parents, he acknowledged that others haven’t had the same experience — but that faith can fill those gaps.

“I always just remind people, if you didn’t have a good father, God can father you. If you didn’t have a good mom, God can mother you,” he explained.

Smith also talked about how his relationship with his parents saw him through his struggles with addiction.

“I just lost my way. I thought I could play with fire and not get burned, and then all of a sudden, I’m trapped,” he said.

Through it all, though, Smith never lost his faith.

“I remember getting high with people and talking about Jesus,” he shared. “I knew that God had a call in my life, and I knew that there was a destiny for my life.”

Smith continued, “My mom and dad never condemned me…I know it hurt my mom and dad. That’s what hurt me.”

One night, Smith had a breakdown and cried on the floor of his kitchen for hours.

“I just know, beyond a shadow of a doubt that [God] was laying on the floor with His arm around me, and I haven’t been the same since,” he said. “I’m convinced it was the prayers of my mom and dad.”

Now, Smith hopes to bring others to Jesus through his music.

“I’m still amazed that I get to be part of building the Kingdom through this gift that God has given me,” the singer told The Alabama Baptist. “It’s something that I love to do, and I hope that my songs help people to realize that they can get through whatever situation they are dealing with, if they trust God.”

He continued, “The ultimate goal of my music is to lead people to believe in Jesus and accept God’s promises. If that happens, praise God, because I think it would allow a lot of people to be victorious and be able to finish well in this journey called life.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Smith’s music:

Michael W. Smith recently sat down with Kirk Cameron to talk about the power of music and the impact it can have on a person’s faith.

“I still think [music] is the most powerful universal language in the world,” Smith said. “It’s amazing how a three-and-a-half-minute song can completely change somebody’s life. The fact that I’ve been doing it for now four decades, I’m just so grateful. You get to see transformation, you get to see the music just completely impact people’s lives and for me, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Smith believes that his songs are powerful because they remind listeners of who God is.

“I feel like [I] don’t need to tell very many people something new, because it’s already there,” Smith said. “I’m a pastor to all these people that come. I’m just reminding them what the book says, and really, that’s it.”
