Why Candace Cameron Bure Almost Gave Up Acting

By Movieguide® Contributor

Candace Cameron Bure recalled how she almost gave up acting because her husband Val struggled watching her get close to other men on screen.

“It’s something that Val and I wrestled with a lot in our marriage,” Bure said, per Church Leaders. “Regardless of a kiss at the end, I really don’t like watching you be close to someone else. And I get that, so we’ve had those struggles and a lot of conversation and prayer.”

Bure eventually decided that she would rather give up acting than hurt her relationship with her husband for the sake of a role. She began turning down movie offers because they involved romance with another man.

“It was hard,” Bure said. “Even praying that prayer, I’m on the side, I’m going, ‘But God, but I’d really like you to not allow me to have to surrender it.’”

God answered her prayer when Val realized Bure was giving up roles for his sake. They came to a compromise that she could take on these movies as long as the farthest she went physically was a kiss and that Val didn’t have to watch the movies.

“This is like years of talking this through,” Bure said. “Then it came to a point where he said, ‘I can handle it, and I don’t want you to give up your entire career.’”

This compromise on both sides has allowed the Lord to work through Bure, as she has since starred in dozens of movies that point toward God. Even when her movies are not explicitly Christian, she makes sure they have elements that reflect His truth.

“As I’ve shifted my career [I have] been able to insert more of a faith-focus narrative in some of the movies. I always want to nod to what the real reason for the season is as a person of faith,” Bure explained.

“I think that has been very important to me, and it doesn’t have to be over the top, but let’s at least, while we’re looking for love on the farm…let’s recognize that we celebrate Christmas because Jesus came to the world and was the Savior of the world, you know, born a baby on Earth and lived the perfect life and willingly sacrificed himself so that we can all be reconciled to God,” she continued. “Now I might not say all of that in the movie, but I want to just recognize what Christmas is all about in that sense.”

Bure’s next Christmas movie, HOME SWEET CHRISTMAS, premieres on GAF on Dec. 1.

“For HOME SWEET CHRISTMAS, Cameron Mathison and I wanted to do a Christmas movie together for so long, and we finally found a script that I thought would be really cute. We play two childhood friends who have known each other forever, and that felt natural because Cameron and I have known each other for a really long time and it’s a very sweet story,” she told For Women First. “It’s more true to a traditional rom-com Christmas movie, whereas A CHRISTMAS LESS TRAVELED has a little bit more of a faith thread throughout it.”
