Reflecting on 30 years of TOY STORY, Tim Allen explained what makes his character, Buzz Lightyear, so special, and why he continues to connect with new generations.
“They let me be me,” Allen said. “The original guy was much more of a disc jockey…A couple times [Buzz] got drunk on tea once and I mimicked what it would be like to be drunk, and they had to redo a lot of that. And the other one was, ‘Buzz, you are a toy.’ And I go, ‘And you are a sad, strange, little man, and you have my pity.’”

Thirty years later, Allen continues to be himself as he and the rest of the crew shoot TOY STORY 5. While the original movies largely focused on the dynamic between Woody and Buzz, the newer entries have expanded who they follow. The upcoming movie is set to largely feature Jessie as the toys fight to maintain their relevancy in a world full of technology.
“I can tell you that [TOY STORY 5] is a lot about Jessie,” Allen told WIVB 4 radio in April. “Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyear. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”
“[Through these characters] we’ve all learned about loyalty and belonging and friendship. These characters have given us a unique perspective on growing up and navigating life and in all the TOY STORY films, above all else, the job of the toys has been to be there for their kids,” added writer and director Andrew Stanton during a Disney D23 conference this summer.

While some fans may worry that another TOY STORY after 30 years is simply a money grab, Allen adamantly reassured them that he and Tom Hanks only returned for another one because the new story is worth telling.
“Well, I don’t know what I’m supposed to say. Yes, I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago,” Allen told Collider last year. “It’s really, really weird to get back in it. I can’t tell you anything.”
“It’s a very, very clever story,” he continued. “I don’t really believe it’s about the money. I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it. Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s really clever.”
TOY STORY 5 is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026.
