In a world where men are taught to be strong, Christian musician KB instead encourages them to be vulnerable so they can find their strength.

“When I told my wife, ‘I need help,’ that was the most courageous thing I did all year…” KB told Relevant. “Our men are taking their own lives at a rate that has exceeded all the major wars in modern history. Men have been socialized to not be in touch with their emotions.”

Not only does this cause men to live broken lives, but their brokenness also bleeds into the lives of those around them — particularly in regards to the crisis of fatherlessness in America.

“I also am a proud proponent of Christian therapists,” KB previously told Christian Huff. “In this day and age, the Lord is giving us the grace of doctors of the soul that can help us to get underneath where some of our trauma triggers are and some of our addictions that plague our lives. I think that’s a powerful thing.”

KB is not the only Christian artist to be open about the importance of seeking help when mental problems arise. Rapper Lecrae also advocates for Christians to get help when they need it and feel no shame doing so. Lecrae himself suffered from severe mental health problems that he was able to find freedom from through therapy.

“I just think it was time,” Lecrae said when explaining why he went public with his problems. “I wanted people to be able to see who I was as a human being and that’s really a large part of my being restored, my faith being restored, my mental, emotional, spiritual self — finding healing there was being free to not be a caricature, being free to be all of myself and to let people see that for who I was.”

For Lecrae, his mental difficulties manifested themselves through finding his worth in his fame and success rather than remaining rooted in the Lord.

“Nobody’s immune from it, especially somebody like myself, who experienced a lot of trauma as a kid, so there are a lot of insecurities,” he shared. “You haven’t dealt with the fact that you feel like you’re unwanted and so every award you win, every song that hits the charts, is feeding you a lie of ‘This is where your value comes from, this is where your worth comes from.’ It’s very subtle, but it starts to take root in your heart.”

In a world where mental health is such a problem, it is helpful for Christians with an audience to encourage their fans to seek healing rather than allowing themselves to continue to be broken.
