Why Kevin Bacon Supports the SAG-AFTRA Strike

By Movieguide® Contributor

On the TODAY show, FOOTLOOSE star Kevin Bacon announced why he supports Hollywood’s SAG-AFTRA strike.

The actor insists that he strikes not for himself but for the middle class.

“In terms of the rich actors, a very small percentage of our union is doing very, very well,” the actor said. “Most of the people are living hand to mouth. Those are the people that we are striking for. My situation is not the same as the majority of our union.”

The Independent reported, “Bacon said that while he personally could ‘negotiate’ his contracts, he was protesting for ‘the working class, middle class part of our union.’”

Many other actors have spoken up about their support for the strikes. Movieguide® previously reported on Mark Ruffalo’s encouragement to actors. He said, “One sure way to strengthen our hand right now is to become very supportive & friendly to all independent projects immediately. Push every SAG-AFTRA member to join the ones that get SAG-AFTRA (WGA) WAIVERS immediately.”

Last month, Bacon was spotted at one of the SAG-AFTRA picket marches. He said the “people out here… [are] aware that not all actors are super, super high-paid actors…they are working-class people who are trying to, you know, make a living.”

Bacon also announced his new podcast on the TODAY show, “Six Degrees with Kevin Bacon,” which highlights significant issues that celebrity interviewees want to address.

“I think it’s important to remember when you look at famous people… [they] have causes that are very, very important to them. He shared that people often “think of us mostly as overpaid buffoons,” but many of them, like himself, are focused on doing good.

Movieguide® previously reported on Bacon’s response to the FOOTLOOSE remake:

The 80s classic is old enough for a reboot which stars Julianne Hough, Miles Teller, Kenny Wormald, and Dennis Quaid.

‘You kind of wake up and in the morning and go ‘really? I’m old enough to have a remake done already?’ But I wish them the best. I hear it’s great. I think he’s [Craig Brewer] a great director, so I’m looking forward to it,’ Fox News Digital reported of Bacon in 2011 on THE ROSIE SHOW.
