How Shia LaBeouf’s Role In PADRE PIO Inspired Him To Join The Catholic Church

By Movieguide® Contributor

FOX NEWS correspondents Lauren Green and Rachel Campos-Duffy recently spoke about Shia LaBeouf’s recent role in the upcoming PADRE PIO and how the movie inspired him to join the Catholic Church.

PADRE PIO tells the story of the real-life Padre Pio, who was named as a saint in 2002.

“He’s one of the great saints of the Catholic Church,” Green explained. “He’s a 20th century saint…He had prophecy and the stigmata.”

She went on to say that one of Pio’s gifts was “for conversion, for reading souls, for healing.”

That healing power was felt by LaBeouf, who has been struggling publicly over the last few years with mental health issues, including suicidal thoughts.

“It’s an amazing story,” Campos-Duffy said. “A lot of people had written off this young actor because he had burned a lot of bridges. His mother wasn’t talking to him. And here he is, coming back to the faith and actually having a conversion to the Catholic faith.”

Movieguide® previously reported on how working on PADRE PIO strengthened LaBeouf’s faith:

Actor Shia LaBeouf says he’s drawing closer to Christ following his role in the movie PADRE PIO.

As filming drew closer, God began to tug on on LaBeouf’s heart. LaBeouf resisted, at first.

“I know now that God was using my ego to draw me to Him. Drawing me away from worldly desires,” LaBeouf said. “It was all happening simultaneously. But there would have been no impetus for me to get in my car, drive up [to the monastery] if I didn’t think, ‘Oh, I’m gonna save my career.’”

Then, the actor says he began to see the heart of Christ.

“It was seeing other people who have sinned beyond anything I could ever conceptualize also being found in Christ that made me feel like, ‘Oh, that gives me hope,’” LaBeouf said. “I started hearing experiences of other depraved people who had found their way in this, and it made me feel like I had permission.”
