All her life, Sadie Robertson Huff has tried to figure out how to conquer fear, and even though she wrote the best-seller Live Fearless, she’s still learning new things about the subject.

“If I went back and rewrote ‘Live Fearless,’ I would change the title to not be like ‘Fearless,’” Huff told author and speaker Jennie Allen on a recent podcast episode. “But maybe I’d put a little break in it, Fear-less. It’s not that you ever are completely gone with fear and actually, I wouldn’t want to be because I think…there’s a natural feeling…that gives you wisdom that something is scary and dangerous; don’t do that.”

Another good side to fear is that it keeps you dependent on the Lord.

“Don’t resist that feeling, just lean into it. That’s where you meet Jesus,” she explained.

Huff recalled how speaking to middle schoolers and high schoolers gave her some trepidation, but she thanked God for feeling nervous, because she doesn’t want to be overconfident in herself.

She told God, “I want to be dependent on you.”

In another podcast episode, Huff recalled, “Every time I tried to lead my life because of my own selfish ambitions, fear stepped in. Many times fear comes from the unknown, and when I tried to lead myself through unknown territory, fear was waiting for me.”

Her fear pushed her to make bad choices, but she found a way to grow from them and trust God.

“The minute I allow God to use my failures, I began to see the fullness of who He is,” she said. “If my failures bring Him glory, I will gladly make them known.”

In 2017, Huff shared, “Night time would some times be the time when I was most fearful, because I would think about every single possibility and situation that could happen. Tonight I Rest In Peace with the unity of the Spirit taking courage and praying for my heart, not for my situations,” she wrote. “That I would grow in confidence in my heavenly faith, not dwell in my worldly fear.”

One of the verses she clings to when she’s tempted to fear at night is Proverbs 3:24: “When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.”

She says God has already conquered her fears for her.

He “teaches me what true living is,” she said.

Huff has come a long way in her fear journey and has a tremendous trust in God — and is all the better for it.
