Can Fear Be a Good Thing? Sadie Robertson Huff Weighs In

By Movieguide® Contributor

In a new episode of “The Squeeze” hosted by actor, Taylor Lautner and his wife, Tay Dome Lautner, Sadie Robertson Huff spoke on the topic of fear and how it can sometimes be a good thing.

“Fear is at times a good thing to lean in to,” she said on the podcast. “There is a toxic fear, like I’m drowning in my anxiety or there is a healthy fear like I feel it, but it’s not going to stop me.

“I think that sometimes this generation we can be so quick to be crippled by our labels that we place on ourselves,” she continued to say. “‘Because I’m anxious then I don’t have to do these things. I’m just going to excuse myself from that.’ No, like you’re stronger than that. Yes, the anxiety is real. Yes, it’s bad, but you are stronger than that. And the more you say yes to doing it, man, the less it’s going to have a grip on your life.”

Biblical Fear

The Bible talks about fear many times, in fact, the phrase “Fear not” is in the Bible 365 times.

One verse that can be read in times of fear is Joshua 1:9:

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

All throughout scripture God challenges men and women to follow his command, take the leap of faith, stand up for their nation, and each time the people would doubt, God would come through for them.

The same is true for us today. The God who was with his people back then are with his people now.

So, “fear not,” God is with you.

Anxiety

Huff’s appearance on The Squeeze isn’t the first time she’s spoken openly about her battles with fear and anxiety.

“I went through postpartum anxiety, which I didn’t really see coming because I had been living free of anxiety for maybe like two years at that point, and then it just slapped me in the face,” Huff said.  “I wanted to do this [podcast] again even before I had the baby to remind me of the truth that I found and the ways out of fear that I found.”

One of the ways Huff steps away from her fear is reminding herself who she is in Christ.

“That is actually not who God created me to be,” she said of her view of herself as an anxious person. “If that is my identity and I claim that as my identity, then I’m always going to be anxious…identifying with your weakness and letting it become who you are is such a big problem because it keeps you from all that God has for you.”
