Why THE CHOSEN’s Season 5 Holy Week Is ‘Chaos’

By Movieguide® Contributor

THE CHOSEN is filming Season 5, and they are not holding anything back.

Reza Diako, who plays Philip, alluded to the “chaos” of capturing Holy Week.

“Season 5 was so different,” he told Collider. “Season 4, for me, is Philip being confronted with his old traumas. In my opinion, he left home for a reason. He has a lot of father issues, I think, so he’s kind of been in pursuit of a father figure in [John] the Baptist. So, the death of the father has been a bit difficult…But in Season 5, he’s like, ‘Oh, okay. So I dealt with that pain, and now it’s time to celebrate this divine father when we arrive into the city.'”

However, Phillip doesn’t get much time in Jerusalem before the events of Holy Week shake his world.

The Direct reported that Holy Week — and therefore Season 5 — includes “Palm Sunday, the Cleansing of the Temple/Jesus Overturning Money Changers Tables, the Last Supper, Judas Betraying Jesus [and] the Garden of Gethsemane.”

“But then, unfortunately, things hit the fan, and the table gets turned upside down,” Diako said. “Then I think it’s his mission in that season. He’s so confronted with so much chaos, and it’s almost too much to digest in the same way that in Season 4, he has so many walk-and-talk moments to just reflect.”

Despite the chaos of the storyline, Diako had a great time filming, posting Instagram pictures of him pretending to be asleep on set.

“Chosen Season 5 felt like a dream… A very beautiful dream,” he captioned the post.

Dallas Jenkins, the show’s creator, said that the Judas storyline in Season 5 was “heartbreaking and tough to film.”

“The portrayal of that in Season 5 is exciting and heartbreaking,” he said. “We’ve already filmed a couple of scenes. Really heartbreaking and tough to film and are going to be tough to watch. They impacted Luke Dimyan who’s playing Judas significantly. How we portray scenes between Jesus and Judas when Jesus knows what’s coming. It’s been really fascinating to portray.”

Movieguide® previously reported on THE CHOSEN Season 5:

THE CHOSEN’s fifth season will explore the prophecy that foretold Jesus’ presence on earth.

“There is a prophecy about the messiah. There’s a prophecy about specifically a colt, and so Jesus is making a statement by riding in on a donkey, He’s making an obvious statement of who He is,” Jenkins told Variety. “He is a fulfillment of a prophecy and for Jews at that time as you saw when Simon Zee [Alaa Safi] and Matthew go to get the donkey and they reference that scripture, and the guy’s like, ‘Oh, I get it. OK, this is for the Lord.’”

Jenkins continued, “And in fact, in the Season 5 premiere — I’ll just give you a little minor spoiler — but religious leaders confront Jesus as He’s about to enter the city, and they say: ‘Please don’t do this. It’s going to cause a lot of division, and it’s going to cause the Sanhedrin to act out against you.’ They’re like, ‘We know what you’re doing. By riding in on a donkey, referencing the prophecy, it couldn’t be more clear what you’re trying to say.’”
