Olympic champion Scott Hamilton knows that fear is a liar, recently reflecting on his personal experience with it.
“Fear is something I’ve had to deal with a lot,” the former figure skater began an Instagram video. “But when you think about fear, it comes in so many shapes and sizes. It’s fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear drives anger, it undermines relationships, it makes people not want to start. But here’s the thing about fear.”
He explained, “Once you pull back a little bit and you kind of see it for what it really is, it’s nothing. And ultimately, I want you to remember this: fear is a liar.”
This echoes what Jesus said in John 14:27 where he tells us we do not need to be afraid: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
“Fear is a liar,” Hamilton added in the caption. “It whispers doubt, feeds hesitation, and holds dreams hostage. Push forward anyway — your growth lives on the other side of discomfort. 🔥💪”

“You are absolutely right! Thank you so much for this! ❤️❤️ God bless you 🙏” one person said. Another added, “You are absolutely right! Thank you so much for this! ❤️❤️ God bless you 🙏”
Hamilton’s story is one of perseverance that certainly required him to defeat fear.
The Olympic gold medalist previously battled stage three cancer and a brain tumor and now uses his platform to share his faith and encourage others going through hard times.
Recently Hamilton accepted the invitation to be a speaker next month at the Red Cross’ Evening of Stars fundraising event.
“This was a wonderful invitation. They were looking for a speaker for this year’s fundraiser. My name came up and Speakers Bureau reached out to me, and they said, ‘Are you available on this date?’ And I said, Yes. And they said, ‘Would you like to be a part of this?’ And I said, Yes,” Hamilton said.
He added, “I’m really honored and thrilled to be coming to Bloomington-Normal and to be able to be a part of this wonderful event that’s raising money for the Red Cross, who really step in and in moments of crisis in a really profound way to help people rise above their circumstances.”
The lesson he wants to share with those attending? “Our bodies are fragile, resilient, ultimately temporary.”
He said, “We want to live our days. We want to live them joyfully, productively and at times, you know, we cannot do this completely alone…We need others to come alongside us. And help us rise above our challenges, rise above our limitations, and rise above our setbacks and our devastations.”
Though we can’t escape moments of fear, we can take comfort knowing that with God’s help, we can overcome.
