ELEMENTAL director Peter Sohn gets the honor of directing THE INCREDIBLES 3, taking over the seat from Brad Bird, who will remain on as a writer for the project.
“I’ve always loved this family and what they represent — the messy, funny, heroic chaos of everyday life. To help tell their next chapter is a true honor,” Sohn said after the news was announced.
Sohn had worked on the storyboard of the two previous INCREDIBLES installments, learning much of the craft from Bird while on these movies.
“Working with [Bird] on the first two films shaped my whole approach to storytelling,” Sohn said. “To now collaborate with him again, but in this new way, is both surreal and incredibly exciting.”
THE INCREDIBLES 3 was announced last summer at Disney’s D23 expo. Nothing has been shared about the plot of the movie, nor does it have a release date set.

Fourteen years after the original movie, THE INCREDIBLES 2 released in 2018 to incredible box office success, grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide. That same year saw the release of some of Marvel’s most popular movies, including BLACK PANTHER, so THE INCREDIBLES 2 only finished the year as the No. 4 movie. Nonetheless, Disney and Pixar would be thrilled if the upcoming entry into the franchise posted similar numbers as the theater industry has struggled ever since the pandemic.
To do so, the creators of the movie will have to focus on similar values of family, sacrifice and generosity to capture a large family audience. THE INCREDIBLES was a Movieguide® Teddy Bear Awards winner and THE INCREDIBLES 2 was a nominee. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
INCREDIBLES 2 is a fun, exciting, family-friendly superhero movie. INCREDIBLES 2 has a strong moral worldview about doing the right thing. The movie also stresses family learning to work together, no matter what the circumstances. Some situations seem a bit mature, though. For example, Elastigirl and Mr. Incredible tackle serious questions about parenthood and raising children. Also, the main villain may be scary for younger children, and there’s light but brief foul language. That said, INCREDIBLES 2 has lots of wit, humor, adventure, and heart.
Meanwhile, Sohn’s previous movies ELEMENTAL and THE GOOD DINOSAUR both promoted strong moral values as well, with an emphasis on family. However, ELEMENTAL also included strong homosexual themes with four gay couples total.
Hopefully Sohn will choose to focuses solely on family-friendly content and create a movie that audiences of all ages can enjoy to continue to legacy of the beloved INCREDIBLES franchise.
