Will This Christmas Movie Rescue the Box Office?

A new Christmas movie will hopefully pull the box office out of the slump it hit this fall.

Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ RED ONE premiered in theaters today.

“After Santa Claus (code name: Red One) is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security (Dwayne Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Chris Evans) in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas,” a synopsis reads.

The film cost $250 million to make, and The Hollywood Reporter said that the action-adventure movie is tracking to take $30 million to $35 million during its opening weekend “before enjoying a long run through the year-end holidays.”

“A major legacy studio in the same situation would come under intense scrutiny if a film carrying that price tag opened to those numbers, but Amazon insists its business model is entirely different and fueled by subscribers, and not just box office. It also hopes to launch a new film franchise,” the outlet added.

Movieguide® rated RED ONE a -2 for moderate language and violence.

RED ONE is marred by too much unnecessary foul language and by some scary fantasy creatures. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children. However, the story otherwise is loads of fun. It has lots of humor and lively action scenes. Also, there are touching moments when Santa, who’s referred to as St. Nicholas, spreads the joy, love and charity of Christmas. There are also touching moments when Jack tries to reconnect with his estranged son. Finally, Santa’s head of security in RED ONE eventually manages to rediscover his love for Christmas.
