Will RINGS OF POWER Season 2 Directors Hold to Tolkein’s Original Worldview?

Will RINGS OF POWER Season 2 Directors Hold to Tolkein’s Original Worldview?

By Movieguide® Contributor

The creative team behind Amazon’s RINGS OF POWER, has set a trio of directors to take point on its impending Season 2. Charlotte Brändstrüm (who directed two episodes of the series’s first season), Sanaa Hamri, and Louise Hopper will together helm this cinematic ship as it sets out for a second voyage.

This fantasy series, whose first season ranks as “the most expensive television show ever” with a price tag of “700 million to produce” was one of the most anticipated series of 2022.

The first season of RINGS OF POWER offers many Christian audiences a deeper dive into Tolkien’s Middle-Earth and its history. According to Movieguide’s®, “The first episode of RINGS OF POWER has a moral compass and Christological references….the first episode moves quickly and has constant jeopardy and many positive references to true faith such as ‘the true king will return.'”

Of the eighth and final episode of season one, Movieguide® writes: “THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER is way better than the two GAMES OF THRONES series on HBO. Streaming on Amazon Prime, Episode Eight of RINGS OF POWER is very satisfying, heartfelt and entertaining. Brilliantly written, it captures the spirit of many of the redemptive, moral themes in Tolkien’s LORD OF THE RINGS.”

It is true that Tolkien’s strongly biblical themes are present in the series, albeit in a form often distorted by postmodern emphases.

It remains to be seen how the new trio of directors, including Hamri, director of Season 2 of THE WHEEL OF TIME, a far less biblically grounded fantasy world and story than Tolkien’s, will handle the production of the RINGS OF POWER second season. Will they be a more traditionalist trio, holding fast to the biblical heart of Tolkien’s mythology? Or will they be a trio of transformation imposing postmodern sensibilities on this greatest of High Fantasy stories?
