Will SUPERMAN: LEGACY Uphold Character’s Traditional Moral And Patriotic Values?
By Movieguide® Contributor
The search is on for the next Superman, and director James Gunn has already revealed what he’s looking for in the next Man of Steel.
“The next Superman has to be someone who has all the humanity that Superman has, but he’s also an alien,” Gunn shared. “It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has and be somebody who you want to give a hug.”
He added, “We have some really great choices, which I’m excited about.”
It’s unknown which young actors are in the running, but Variety reported that THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL star Pierson Fodé is a strong contender for the starring role.
SUPERMAN: LEGACY is expected to hit theaters in 2025 and will be written and directed by Gunn, who also serves as co-chairperson and co-CEO of DC Studios.
Gunn has a long history working in the superhero genre, from HBO’s PEACEMAKER, to the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY trilogy.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 has been massively successful with fans and critics alike, due to its emphasis on themes like compassion, sacrifice, and the importance of family. A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 has some of the most moving, gripping, funny, redemptive content in any Marvel movie. There are at least three positive references to God and some allusions to Heaven and its beauty. The movie also promotes compassion, courage, sacrifice, standing up to evil, doing the right thing, repentance, and family. However, some of VOL. 3’s violence is excessive. The movie has about 25 to 27 obscenities, a gross scatological joke and some homosexual jokes involving a minor effeminate villain. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.
Gunn’s work on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 has many viewers hopeful that SUPERMAN: LEGACY will contain the same moral, redemptive themes, while promoting Superman’s history as a character that stands for truth, justice, and the American way.
