Will We Get Another BACK TO THE FUTURE Sequel?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Don’t expect to see another BACK TO THE FUTURE sequel any time soon.
The movie’s been iconic since its release in 1985, but despite its enduring popularity, director Robert Zemeckis says it’s unlikely that there will be any more.
“We always felt that this was enough, and it had to just live…with being the three movies,” he said on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast. “You know, we have to say, ‘There are different things that might work.’ Something like that, you know? But to remake the movie or to suggest that there’s a BACK TO THE FUTURE 4, it just isn’t in the cards.”
He would, however, be open to a musical version of BACK TO THE FUTURE.
“I would like to do the BACK TO THE FUTURE: THE MUSICAL [movie]. I would love to do that,” Zemeckis added. “I think that would be great. I floated that out to the folks at Universal. They don’t get it. So, [there’s] nothing I can do.”
BACK TO THE FUTURE starred Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson and Lea Thompson. A synopsis of the first film reads, “Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.”
That movie was followed up by a sequel in 1989 titled BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 2 and BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 3 in 1990.
While a fourth installment isn’t in the works, the franchise has inspired several other projects.
“Lloyd reprised his BACK TO THE FUTURE PART role in a short film titled DOC BROWN SAVES THE WORLD, which was released to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary. A stage musical made its debut in 2020 in England before opening in Broadway in 2023,” Deadline reported.
