Wilmer Valderrama to Don the Mask of Zorro in New Disney Branded Series

Actor Wilmer Valderrama, known for NCIS and THAT ’70s SHOW, will star as “Zorro” in an upcoming ZORRO series through Disney Branded Television.

Valderrama would wear the mask of Zorro as the alter-ego of Don Diego de la Vega. The series is based on the 1950s Disney and ABC series, ZORRO.

“We’re reimagining this Disney classic as a compelling period piece, set in Pueblo de Los Angeles, but told in a very modern telenovela style — with richly drawn contemporary characters and relationships set against the action, drama, suspense and humor of the original, iconic Zorro,” Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, said. “Wilmer shares our commitment to reflect the interesting and rich diversity of the human experience and we look forward to delivering a culturally relevant and entertaining story with definitional characters that will connect with our viewers for generations to come.”

“Growing up, Zorro was the one character that made me, as a Latino, feel like I could be a hero,” Valderrama added. “As an adult and a storyteller, I have a responsibility in the stories that I help bring to life. To partner with [executive producer] Gary [Marsh] and Disney to bring Zorro back into the family after 60 years and be a part of the legacy for other children to know they too can be the heroes of their own stories is a dream come true.”

Valderrama recently lent his voice talents to Disney hits like ENCANTO and ONWARD.

THE MASK OF ZORRO (1998) is a previous rendition of the story of Zorro and was honored at Movieguide®’s Annual Awards Gala as one of the Ten Best Family Movies of 1998.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads

THE MASK OF ZORRO includes lots of swashbuckling and a very tight plot. This handsome production features the fight for control of Mexico and California. Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins put moral humanity on this old-world hero in an adaptation that features extensive swordplay and action violence as well as one grotesque scene of a man’s head in a jar, but no sex, no nudity and only a few mild obscenities. …

Like Superman, Zorro is an enduring hero. Unlike Superman, he is a common man fighting for common people. This adaptation of the masked swordsman is a handsome, accomplished work, keeping the nobility and uprightness of a hero who has flaws, but has a good heart and respects the faith and morals of the people for which he fights.
