WONKA Continues to Soar at the Box Office

Willy Wonka and his chocolate factory continued to soar high at the box office.

Since Wednesday, WONKA “topped the box office on Wednesday, adding $8 million to push the film past the $100 million mark domestically. The movie’s stateside gross stands at a delicious $102.5 million. WONKA is also performing well overseas — its global haul of more than $270 million is a strong result for Warner Bros. and the film’s star, Timothée Chalamet,” Variety reported.

This performance secures the new movie as the Christmas box office winner.

“It is key that the movie is showing longevity despite so many different movies taking up space in theaters,” Screen Rant reported. “This means that WONKA could continue to leg out to a strong result in the new year, as holiday season hits tend to perform consistently through January. This is what buoyed the December 2017 sleeper hit THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, which eventually earned $434.9 million worldwide despite a meager $8.8 million opening.”

With the steady increase in revenue, WONKA is the eighteenth highest revenue-producing film of 2023 in the United States and worldwide.

Other notable movies that premiered on or around Christmas included MIGRATION, THE COLOR PURPLE, THE BOYS IN THE BOAT and AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM.

“MIGRATION has moved up to No. 2 behind WONKA. The family film earned $6.3 million on Wednesday for a domestic total of $30.6 million,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote.

“MGM and Amazon’s George Clooney-directed THE BOYS IN THE BOAT followed at No. 6 with a solid $2.5 million and a better-than-expected three-day domestic tally of $11.2 million,” the source added.

Three of the top box office earners all tell uplifting stories with strong moral values.

A part of Movieguide®’s review for THE BOYS IN THE BOAT reads:

THE BOYS IN THE BOAT is very entertaining, well-acted and well-made. It tells an inspiring, patriotic, uplifting true story with some strong biblical, moral, redemptive, and patriotic themes.

The main character in the movie has to learn to give up his pride and work as a teammate. The movie is extremely refreshing as it has a relationship with a man and woman that is wholesome.

Movieguide® celebrated MIGRATION’s “many positive moral, pro-family messages.”

The review reads:

MIGRATION is a funny, sweet, heartwarming comedy with many positive moral, pro-family messages. It extolls marriage and positive family relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and siblings. Of course, the story portrays some family struggles, but it shows how families can overcome hardships and be more loving to one another. However, there are several scary situations, such as scary pigeons and scary-looking birds who might eat ducks, but they turn out to be harmless. So, don’t judge someone by their looks! The Chef in MIGRATION, however, is very scary up to the climax.

Movieguide® called WONKA “a very fun, funny movie, one of the most entertaining movies of the year. There are many fun and memorable songs throughout the movie, which makes it a delight to watch. WONKA shows good triumphing over evil through the magic of joy and great dreams. It also supports the little entrepreneur starting his own little business in the face of a government-sanctioned cartel.”
