WONKA Earns Over $250 Million Worldwide

By Movieguide® Contributor

WONKA has surpassed $250 million in box office revenue in just two weeks since its release.

“The prequel story, starring Timothée Chalamet as the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka, added $33.2 million from 77 international markets, a scant 33% drop from the prior weekend. WONKA has generated $171.3 million overseas and $254.9 million to date. It’s a sweet tally since the film cost $100 million,” Variety reported.

WONKA is “based on the extraordinary character at the center of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl’s most iconic children’s book and one of the best-selling children’s books of all time. WONKA tells the wondrous story of how the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today,” a synopsis of the film reads.

Chalamet celebrated the movie’s success on Instagram.

“WOWWWW – actually can’t believe this!!” he wrote. “What a week! Thank you to everyone who saw WONKA in theaters this past weekend and to the GOLDEN GLOBES for the nomination! One more week till we’re out in the US!! every good thing in this world started with a dream :)”

Collider reported, “Reviews for the film have been solid. The film currently sits at a ‘fresh’ 83% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also earned a strong A- Cinema Score from opening day audiences, while Collider’s Ross Bonaime praised the film’s visuals, and also Chalamet’s central performance. He wrote in his review that the young actor perfectly captures the character’s ‘charm and optimism.’ Also starring Calah Lane, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Grant, WONKA is currently playing in theaters.”

Part of Movieguide®’s review of the film reads:

WONKA is a colorful fantasy that tells how Willy became Willy Wonka. Before she dies, Willy’s mother tells him that every good thing started with a dream. Willy goes to the big city to sell his chocolate, which was inspired by his mother. However, three large chocolate makers try stop anc even kill Willy. Also, an evil landlady takes his money and forces him into servitude. Also, there’s this little orange man with green hair named Oompa Loompa who demands Willy repay his tribe for the three cocoa beans Willy took.

WONKA is a very fun, funny movie, one of the most entertaining movies of the year. There are many fun and memorable songs throughout the movie, which makes it a delight to watch. WONKA shows good triumphing over evil through the magic of joy and great dreams. It also supports the little entrepreneur starting his own little business in the face of a government-sanctioned cartel. However, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older pre-teens because the cartel has bribed the police and a cathedral and its clerics with chocolate they can’t resist.
