Would Jim Carrey Return for a Second GRINCH Movie?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Jim Carrey explained that he would consider returning for a sequel to HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS if he could use modern technology to change his appearance instead of cosmetics.
“You know, if we could figure out the Grinch [I would love to reprise the role],” Carrey told Comic Book. “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and all things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”
A sequel to HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS would be a shock to many as the original movie came out nearly 25 years ago. However, the story is certainly beloved, and the original movie offered extensive family-friendly fun. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS is an entertaining family fantasy. This movie retains the central message that there’s more to Christmas than presents and augments it with tremendous visual and special effects. Although the story includes some romantic worldview elements, it is clear that there is sin in Whoville and that people need repentance and forgiveness. The production values here are a wonderful treat, but many people may be disappointed about the lack of specific references to Jesus Christ in this Christmas offering. The movie also includes some infrequent scatological humor and some slapstick violence that parents should warn their children not to imitate.
Carrey’s interest in creating a sequel comes as a surprise as the actor announced his retirement in April 2022. Though he returned for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3, Carrey, nonetheless, is interested in pursuing hobbies over more movies.

“I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas,” he added. “I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
