YouTube Testing Gaming Feature Called ‘YouTube Playables’

According to a new report, YouTube plans to branch out from video content by adding simple video games to their platform.

The Wall Street Journal reported that YouTube is debuting a new feature, “YouTube Playables,” that will offer users simple games like the ones featured on Facebook.

For example, in “Stack Bounce,” players break bricks. The game can be played on the mobile app, as well as in a browser.

The WSJ’s report came after the outlet obtained an email detailing this new project, but YouTube has declined to comment on Playables.

“Gaming has long been a focus at YouTube,” a spokesperson for the company said. “We’re always experimenting with new features, but have nothing to announce right now.”

The report stated that the site “is already a popular destination for gamers and competes with Amazon’s Twitch for viewers of live streamed footage. By hosting a selection of online games, the product would give YouTube a larger footprint in the sector.”

While this expansion into games makes sense, some are curious about how soon this project has been launched after the demise of Google’s Stadia, another gaming endeavor.

GameRant reported, “The rise and fall of Google Stadia took barely three years combined, with the tech giant being fairly quick to abandon the service due to an overall lack of users.”

It’s still unclear whether or not YouTube will officially launch Playables, but adding simple games to the platform would be a creative way for the video streaming platform to increase their number of users.
