What You Need To Know:
Netflix has found its formula for original docuseries, and DANCING FOR THE DEVIL: THE 7M TIKTOK CULT is no exception; delivering top-notch production value and straightforward storytelling. While the first episode suffers from repeated information it highlights resilient family bonds. The series balances its portrayal of religion with care and doesn’t condemn Christianity. MOVIEGUIDE® recommends caution for younger viewers and teens for adult themes, suggestive dancing, one use of the f-word, and the manipulative portrayal of religion.

Episode one introduces the Wilking sisters, Melanie and Miranda, two social media stars, who pursue their dream of dancing together, relocate to Los Angeles and connect with other dancers. Miranda begins dating James, who attends Shekinah Church. Robert Shinn’s son, Isaiah, films James’ music videos. Miranda attends Robert Shinn’s church. She’s invited to dinner, along with James and other dancers. Robert invites the group to commit to his church and join 7M. Miranda cuts off her family (including her sister) as Robert’s false gospel and promise of financial gain control her.
DANCING FOR THE DEVIL suffers from a misleading title, which fails to accurately depict the series’ content. It follows the typical cookie-cutter format of most Netflix docuseries, delivering high production value, editing, and compelling visuals. However, the first episode is long and relies on multiple redundant interviews and snippets from social media that are fillers rather than moving the story forward.
DANCING FOR THE DEVIL’s strong suit is its ability to balance the condemning of Robert Shinn’s false religion without condemning all forms of organized Christianity. However, the series includes several images of the church, the Bible, and quotations of scripture that are taken out of context by Shinn, potentially painting Christianity in a negative light that may confuse some viewers. The series contains immodest clothing on female dancers, and brief, suggestive dancing. There is one use of the f-word, and one sexual comment made towards a boy’s girlfriend.
However, the first episode emphasizes the parents’ love for their daughter, willingness to fight for her, and the importance of family. Due to some adult themes, manipulative depictions of religion, and brief suggestive dancing, Movieguide advises caution for younger viewers.
