HIGH STRUNG

"Love Overcomes All Obstacles"

What You Need To Know:

HIGH STRUNG is an emotively involving dance movie. Ruby is a lovely young Midwestern ballet dancer who comes to New York to study at the Manhattan Conservatory. Johnny’s an illegal British immigrant who plays his grandfather’s violin for tips in the subway. She finds the conservatory much tougher than anything she’s done before. One day on the subway, Johnny saves Ruby from two muggers, but his grandfather’s violin is stolen. Ruby’s attracted to Johnny and tries to help him, but he’s an artiste and doesn’t want help. Slowly, he realizes he likes Ruby, but so does the conservatory’s best violinist. Eventually, they go head to head at the competition for string and dance.

HIGH STRUNG has a very strong plot set in a very imaginative world of dance that includes ballet, contemporary and street dancing. Although it’s never overtly sexual like many other dance movies, it does lightly imply romance. In addition, there’s brief foul language. HIGH STRUNG is very powerful. The ending is superb and heartwarming. HIGH STRUNG is a little edgy, but it’s not as edgy contemporary Hollywood dance movies.

More Detail:

HIGH STRUNG is an emotively involving dance movie about an unlikely couple who enter the Manhattan Conservatory of Arts Peterson dance contest.

Ruby is a lovely young Midwestern ballet dancer who comes to New York to study at the Manhattan Conservatory. Jonathan is an illegal immigrant from Britain who plays his grandfather’s violin for tips at a subway station. She finds the conservatory is much tougher than anything she’s done before.

One day on the subway station, two street dance groups get into a dance battle. Two guys try to rob Ruby. Jonathan stops them but loses his grandfather’s violin, which is stolen. Ruby is attracted to Johnny and tries to help him, but he’s an artiste and doesn’t want anyone to help him. Slowly, he realizes he likes Ruby, but so does one of the conservatory’s violinists, who is the best of this year’s class.

They have several battles of the violin, with dance added. Eventually, they go head to head at the Peterson competition for string and dance.

HIGH STRUNG has a very strong plot, with the love story of Ruby and Johnny, set in a very imaginative world of dance that includes ballet, contemporary and street dancing. Although it never becomes overtly sexual like many other dance movies, it does imply Ruby’s roommate, Jasmine, spends night after night with her dance lover. It also implies Ruby gets more involved with Johnny than viewers see on the screen. In addition, there is some brief foul language.

HIGH STRUNG is very powerful. The ending is superb and heartwarming. HIGH STRUNG is a little edgy, but it’s not as edgy contemporary Hollywood dance movies.
