More Detail:
A murder from the past torments a man in ALICE AND MARTIN, a French import that depicts guilt, anger and estranged family relations.
The story opens with Martin (played by Alexis Loret), at age 10, being sent away to live with his father in order to have the opportunity for a good education. Twelve years later, Martin flees from his home, stealing food to eat along the way. Eventually, he goes to Paris to see his half-brother, Benjamin, who welcomes him with open arms. Benjamin, a homosexual, has a roommate, Alice. Alice is a musician, and Benjamin is an actor. Thus, the two have much in common.
Upon Martin’s arrival, Alice is civil to him, though not altogether impressed. After a while, Martin begins modeling in top circuits. As his career grows, his feelings toward Alice grow as well. Eventually he tells Alice how he feels, much to Alice’s confusion and shock. When she refuses him, he moves away to do work in another area. However, she realizes her feelings for him, and they reunite, growing closer in their relationship.
When Alice tells Martin she is pregnant with their child, something inside Martin snaps, and he goes away to seclusion, with Alice by his side, refusing to leave him. He treats her coldly, but she refuses to give up. He then tells her about his childhood, how his father was verbally abusive and revealing his responsibility for killing his father. Knowing he cannot go on living in seclusion, he checks himself into a mental hospital, and, from there, he writes Alice, asking his family to bring charges against him. Eventually, the love that Alice has for Martin grows into a stronger bond as the one between Martin and his family grows weaker.
ALICE AND MARTIN is a combination of emotional and mental turmoil mixed in with love, hate and family relationships. Though the dedication Alice has to Martin is admirable, it seems to appear almost overnight. The acting seems a bit overdrawn at times.
This movie’s little moral quality is marred by a pagan worldview, homosexual elements, depicted sex, foul language, and other questionable elements. The depicted love relationship between the main characters, though loyal, displays a lack of moral standards. This makes their relationship appear to be formed more out of desperation than romance.
