Just in time for this year’s Presidential election, BOB ROBERTS is a political satire about a pseudo-religious, folk singer-turned-conservative politician running for U.S. Senate. The movie unwinds as a British documentary about Roberts’ campaign, leading up to the 1990 election, against the backdrop of Operation Desert Shield. Roberts is all-smiles, superficial and underqualified, yet remains confident about being elected. His empty slogans about drug abuse and promiscuity are matched with a singing appearance as host of a beauty pageant. Believing his popularity as a musician will coast him into public office, Roberts produces songs and absurd music videos that blame the country’s ills on liberals and the social programs of the Great society. Robert’s opponent is longstanding Pennsylvania Sen. Brickley Paiste, who is accused of having an affair with a 15-year-old.
The surprise ending mocks Roberts as a two-faced charlatan. His message contradicts his actions, and his prayers and promises are merely a means of winning the election. Although BOB ROBERTS moves well, has clever performances and holds our interest, only a few will enjoy this heavy-handed, mean-spirited attack on conservatives–most will not.
