CHRISTIAN MINGLE

What You Need To Know:

CHRISTIAN MINGLE is a comedy about a successful advertising executive who becomes smitten by a Christian man who works at her father’s construction company. Gwyneth agrees to go with Paul’s church on a mission trip to rebuild a Catholic church in a small town in Mexico devastated by an earthquake. However, Paul’s mother thinks there’s something phony about her. She finally convinces Paul, who loves his mother, to dump Gwyneth when they find CHRISTIANITY FOR DUMMIES under her cot. Devastated, Gwyneth returns to her job in the United States. So, the questions are: Will she ever find Jesus? Will she stop lying to herself and to others?

CHRISTIAN MINGLE has a great heart and a good evangelistic message. Much of it is laugh-out-loud funny. Some of it is a double-edged sword, which gives a slightly satirical view of the Christian club, that is, Christians who use Christian jargon to separate themselves from others. The jeopardy seems to disappear and the movie sags a little bit in the middle. The ending, however, is fulfilling and lovable. MOVIEGUIDE® commends the filmmakers for faith-filled humor.

Content:

(CCC, BBB, M) Extremely evangelistic, very Christocentric, Christian worldview in a comedy romance about a young woman who lies to find a spouse on Christian Mingle, but the lying is eventually rebuked and overcome; no foul language; no violence; no sexual immorality or salacious sexual content but there are a few kisses; no nudity; no alcohol; no smoking or drugs; and, the plot problem is lying, but it’s rebuked.

More Detail:

CHRISTIAN MINGLE is a funny, laugh-out-loud, satirical movie revolving around conversion and love.

The movie opens with Gwyneth going on another blind date and losing the attention of her date with each word she says. Later, in a conversation with her friends, she says she’s never going to find Mr. Right. Gwyneth is a successful advertising executive. With the TV blaring in the background, she keeps getting assaulted by a commercial for the Christian Mingle dating site. Finally, in despair, in a hilarious scene, she signs up for Christian Mingle. Clearly, she’s not a Christian, but, when she meets Paul, she is smitten. He is handsome, successfully employed at his father’s construction company and a joyous, contented Christian.

To keep up appearances, Gwyneth buys CHRISTIANITY FOR DUMMIES and THE BIBLE FOR DUMMIES. Meanwhile, at work, her bald boss tells her she’s going to be representing the biggest TV infomercial sales person, Donny, who has discovered the magic pill to cure baldness. Gwyneth doesn’t believe in the pill and tells Donny as much, almost losing the account.

At the same time, Paul’s church has gone on a mission trip to rebuild a Catholic church in a small town in Mexico devastated by an earthquake. Gwyneth decides to go with him, but Paul’s mother, thinks there’s something phony about her. She finally convinces Paul, who loves his mother, to dump Gwyneth when they find CHRISTIANITY FOR DUMMIES under her cot.

Devastated, Gwyneth returns to her job in the United States. So, the question becomes, will she ever find true love? Will she ever find Jesus? Will she stop lying to herself and to others?

CHRISTIAN MINGLE has a great heart and a very good evangelistic message. Much of it is laugh-out-loud funny. Some of it is a double-edged sword, which gives a slightly satirical view of the Christian club, that is, Christians who use Christianese to separate themselves from others.

The acting is superior. The beginning is very funny. In the middle, however, while Gwyneth is dating Paul, the jeopardy seems to disappear, and the movie sags a little bit. Clearly, this could be tightened and the jeopardy enhanced. The ending, however, is fulfilling and lovable, in the sense that the audience falls in love with these characters. They really want to do the right thing and discover they can only do so in the name of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.
