It is also rife with moral relativism as the couple try to keep up with their own lies and deceptions. Despite this, DIVIDED WE FALL is an uplifting story filled with fascinating characters. In spite of the darkness imposed on the town (and the story), DIVIDED WE FALL finds humor in the small occurrences of life along the way. On a deeper level, it is about the redemption of a lost society which averted its eyes from the war’s atrocities

DIVIDED WE FALL is the story of a childless couple who hide and protect a young Jewish man fleeing from the Germans during World War II. In the beginning, Josef and Marie watch helplessly as their Jewish friends and neighbors are rounded up and sent away. When a neighbor’s son escapes from a concentration camp, they decide to risk their own lives by concealing the young man in their basement. Complicating matters, another friend has become a German collaborator. He has eyes for Marie and often drops by unannounced. Soon enough, he discovers their secret and tries to take advantage of faithful Marie.
A short while later, Josef and Marie are confronted with the possibility of a German officer being sent to live with them. Marie impulsively announces she is pregnant and that they will need the extra room for the baby. Josef, fearing greatly for the safety of his family and knowing he cannot father a child, demands Marie to have relations with the young Jewish man. She protests and is heartbroken at the thought of such a request. Regrettably, out of love for her husband, Marie becomes pregnant and their secret is safe for a short while longer.
Filled with fascinating and likable characters, DIVIDED WE FALL asks each person how deep their loyalties lie and to what extent they will remain true. It is a thoroughly engrossing story, often beset by fear and paranoia in the difficult life under occupation. In spite of the darkness imposed on the town (and the story), DIVIDED WE FALL finds humor in the small occurrences of life along the way. Immersed in difficult situations, it seems believable that people would find reasons to laugh or they’d end up crying. One particularly humorous scene shows Josef’s German friend lecturing him about what abnormal times can do to normal people.
Despite the darker themes of this time period and some moral relativism, DIVIDED WE FALL is an uplifting story filled with a message of hope and faith. It is fascinating that the movie’s title is uttered alternately as a message of encouragement and a genuine threat. On a deeper level, DIVIDED WE FALL is about the redemption of a lost society which averted its eyes from the war’s atrocities.
