HAPPY END

What You Need To Know:

HAPPY END is a ludicrously depressing, morbid French drama. It’s a sequel to filmmaker Michael Haneke’s disturbing movie AMOUR, which was a critical darling few people saw. The movie begins with 13-year-old Eve secretly filming her mother, whom she says is selfish. The footage shows Eve’s mother who’s been knocked out by drugs that Eve secretly gave her. When her mother is hospitalized, Eve is sent to live with her mother’s ex-husband, Thomas, his wife, and her Aunt Anne, a construction company owner, who all live together in a mansion with the grandfather, who has dementia. Eve interacts with all the family members who seem to be just as miserable as she is. The experience gives Eve thoughts of suicide.

HAPPY END is one of the most pointless, hopelessly dumb movies ever. Not much happens in the movie. Long action-less shots drag on for far too long, and the performances are weak. HAPPY END is a humanist story of self-loathing depression that offers no comfort to the human struggle. It’s an abhorrent movie that nearly all moviegoers will want to avoid.

Content:

(HHH, L, V, S, N, AA, MMM) Very strong humanist worldview highlighting hopeless characters, who attempt suicide and euthanize their spouses or grandparents; five obscenities, one profanity, many mentions of urine; implied attempted suicide twice, euthanasia, child has a dog bite wound, and a man is beaten up, kicked and punched; implied adultery, and characters have an illicit sexual conversation over Messenger, the phone app; upper male nudity, women in bikinis at the beach; moderate drinking, with implied alcoholism; no smoking or drug use; and, very strong immoral content with highly dysfunctional family.

More Detail:

HAPPY END is a ludicrously depressing, morbid, abhorrent French drama about a depressed 13-year-old girl, Eve, who poisons her mother and tries to poison herself.

The movie begins with Eve secretly filming her mother, whom she says is selfish. We then see footage of Eve’s mother who’s been knocked out by drugs that Eve secretly gave her. When her mother is hospitalized, Eve is sent to live with her mother’s ex-husband and his wife, Thomas and Anais Laurent, as well as her aunt Anne Laurent, a construction firm owner, who all live together a mansion with the grandfather, George, who has dementia.

Aunt Anne is dealing with an accident that happened at one of her construction sites, while also trying to get her drunkard, mentally troubled adult son to care about something in life. Meanwhile, Thomas is having an affair with a cellist, and Eve finds their illicit online messages on his computer one day.

Eve interacts with all the family members, who seem to be just as miserable as she is. The movie ends with a bizarre dinner scene and an old man trying to drown himself.

HAPPY END may be one of the most pointless, hopelessly dumb movies ever. Filmmaker Michael Haneke also wrote and direct the Oscar darling AMOUR about an elderly man who smothers his wife with a pillow as an “act of love.” HAPPY END is a sequel and is about that elderly man’s children and grandchildren. Most frustrating about HAPPY END is that not much happens in the movie. Long action-less shots drag on for far too long, and the performances are weak.

HAPPY END is a humanist story of self-loathing depression that offers no comfort or hope the human struggle. It’s an abhorrent movie that nearly all moviegoers, not just media-wise ones, will want to avoid.
