THE ASSOCIATE stars Whoopi Goldberg as a scorned woman who creates a fictional white male partner to start a financial consulting firm in New York City. Goldberg plays Laurel Ayers , a successful analyst. At promotion time, she gets passed over for a male colleague. Infuriated, she starts her own company. During one meeting, she lies to a white male CEO and says that her partner “Robert S. Cutty ” drafted the proposal. The CEO accepts the proposal, and the bogus Cutty is given accolades and credit. When Cutty is subpoenaed for possible fraud, Laurel dresses up as Cutty . While escaping the advances of the sexually charged Camille, Laurel as Cutty devises a shocking expose that will put an end to the Cutty charade for good.
THE ASSOCIATE is not a well made movie. It is not funny. As a stab against the WASP financial establishment, this movie attempts to show that it isn’t race or gender that should be rewarded but ambition and ideas. Although a noble idea, this movie attacks white-male leaders through fraud and deceit. The lesson, it seems, is to lie, cheat and steal your way to the top. Coupled with cross-dressing and sexual innuendo, it is not a moral or entertaining movie.
