THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson delivers two hours of explosive, violent entertainment. Samantha Caine seems like the ideal housewife and mother to her daughter, Caitlin, but Samantha has amnesia. She can only remember the past eight years of her life. Chaos breaks her idyllic life when an escaped convict open fires on her family. After a violent and desperate struggle, she dispatches the killer with a glass pie plate. Samantha slow transforms to Charly , her previous incarnation as an assassin as she hooks up with a low-rent detective named Mitch. Mid-way into the movie, Davis has completely transformed into a highly trained, ruthless, bleach-blond assassin.
This tough-girl action movie doesn’t cover any new ground. It chronicles the transformation of a loving mother into a bloodthirsty killer. The fact that it places a woman at the center of such violence only makes the movie more disturbing. Furthermore, the transformation from Samantha to Charly takes place far too quick and easily. It does not display any of the complex motives for change that would make the plot interesting or believable. Containing excessive violence and excessive profanity, it offers no new thrills from man-led action pictures and even offers a disturbing look at a woman now getting in the kicks and gunplay.
