What You Need To Know:
THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES is an unsatisfying supernatural thriller that offers no explanation as to what Mothman could be. The movie claims that mankind is not meant to have an explanation for every strange phenomenon. Thus, its occult worldview likely will disappoint even those who are interested in such ungodly subjects.

More Detail:
Richard Gere stars in THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES as John Klein, a Washington Post reporter who encounters an occult phenomenon. John’s wife has a strange vision of some thing in the night, and their car crashes. Mary ends up in the hospital, where the doctors discover a mysterious brain tumor that eventually kills her. Before she dies, however, she makes weird sketches of a moth-like bipedal creature.
Two years later, John mysteriously ends up in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, miles away from where he was supposed to be. When the woman sheriff there tells him that the townspeople have been seeing strange visions similar to Mary’s drawings, John stays to investigate. John learns that the townspeople may be seeing visions of the mysterious Mothman, who only shows up when a significant disaster is about to strike. Mothman’s prediction of 99 people dying comes true (in a plane crash), so John begins to believe that a disaster will strike Point Pleasant very soon. He tries to prevent it.
THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES is not very dramatically satisfying, although it may pique people’s curiosity since it’s based on a true disaster story. It offers no explanation as to what Mothman could be, but it alleges that the supernatural creature is omniscient. The movie claims that mankind is not meant to have an explanation for every strange phenomenon. Thus, the movie’s occult worldview is not likely to satisfy those interested in such things.
