In the fourth episode of the ADVENTURES OF PUSS IN BOOTS series, the “Duchess” is an evil woman who craves power and magic. However, she doesn’t have the ability to do it herself and therefore collects the souls of great sorcerers and uses their magic. In order to complete her collection, she needs one last soul: the soul of San Lorenzo’s very own alchemist, Artephius. She manages to kidnap the old man but is hindered by his flirtatious behavior with her, thus revealing that the two characters had a surprisingly heated past.

“Duchess” is a well-written, imaginative episode in the ADVENTURES OF PUSS IN BOOTS series. The interactions between the Duchess and Artephius are funny and witty. However, this episode is largely based on sorcery and alchemy to keep the plot moving, so some caution is advised for impressionable children. Also, the Duchess does not learn her lesson in the end, vowing to get her revenge. Finally, the message that “people will be good if given a chance” is constantly repeated. So, caution is advised for this ADVENTURES OF PUSS IN BOOTS episode.
