The Season 3 premiere of WILL TRENT sees the titular character reluctantly reentering his life with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation after getting a call from an old friend who’s in trouble with the law.
Season 3, Episode 1 of WILL TRENT, opens a few months after the shocking events of the Season 2 finale. Will has left his job with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation after turning in police officer and romantic partner Angie for covering up a murder.
Meanwhile, in Atlanta, two off-duty cops are shot while leaving a police barbecue. Rafael Wexford, a gang leader, is accused of ordering the hit, as the surviving injured cop said their shooters were wearing gang colors. Wexford refuses to leave his house and only negotiates with Will.
Will reluctantly goes back to Atlanta. Wexford, a childhood friend, tells him he’s being set up and asks Will to find the true perpetrator. He also shares that a rival gang had wanted to partner with him, but he refused. Will says he will stay in town until the case is solved. He and his old teammates at the GBI begin investigating and discover that the getaway car driven by the shooters is the same make and model as many cars that have been stolen in the area recently.
They also discover that the police officer who died, Chester Flynn, arranged to speak to Assistant District Attorney Marion Alba. Will meets with her, and while Marion doesn’t know what Chester is going to talk to her about, she shares her suspicions that Chester is a “whistleblower” and that dirty cops might have been the ones to kill him.
The investigation takes a turn when Wexford confesses to the shootings. Wexford won’t answer when Will asks why but insinuates it’s because someone is watching them. Will and his team search Wexford’s home for clues that explain why Wexford would confess, and Will realizes that Wexford has a young daughter. They break into his computer and see he sent a photograph of his daughter, Sunny, bound and gagged in the trunk of a car. Marion agrees to keep the case open for as long as she can to give them time to exonerate Wexford and find the real killer.
