CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN (1950)
Showing how to organize a large family (be fruitful and multiply), this real-life story of the Gilbreth family has a wonderful scene where the father and mother ironically skewer a prissy, stuck-up representative from the evil Planned Parenthood. Clifton Webb plays the unforgettable father, and Myrna Loy is the strong, supportive mother.
MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING
MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is a big fat independent movie that’s a celebration of one American woman’s ethnic heritage, including the remnants of her family’s Greek Orthodox Christian faith. The nominal Christian worldview in this movie is spoiled by a brief, implied sexual interlude, passionate kissing, some foul language, and abundant use of alcohol.
SHADOWLANDS presents the challenging story of the brief and emotionally turbulent marriage of Christian author/scholar C.S. Lewis to American poet Joy Gresham. With outstanding (and understated) performances by Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger, an intelligent script and gorgeous cinematography, this film presents an eloquent portrait of sacrificial love--indeed, of the emotions of love growing from selfless acts of love. Only an unfortunate failure to depict the resolution of a crisis of faith which naturally followed Lewis' tragic loss of his wife prevents this film from being a masterpiece on the order of CHARIOTS OF FIRE.
THE QUIET MAN
A bit of hilarious Irish blarney that gives a wonderful presentation of the give and take that a marriage needs to succeed. John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara star as the reluctant ex-boxer and his feisty bride who have problems with their egos and with her mean-spirited brother, played wonderfully by the great Victor McLaglen Director John Ford shows his usual flair for comedy.
JULIE & JULIA
JULIE & JULIA is a savory cinematic dish about a young woman who is inspired by famous American cook and TV pioneer Julia Child to spend one year cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s book on French cuisine and writing a blog about it. The movie deftly goes back and forth between the woman’s experience and Julia Child’s early career, but it contains some foul language, some light sexual references and some brief politically correct content.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
THE SOUND OF MUSIC is the most successful musical in history with a brilliant performance by Julie Andrews. It has a profound Christian message about seeking God’s will for your life and is as clean and wholesome as can be.
FIREPROOF is an incredibly gripping, compelling, heartrending, transformational story about saving a marriage between a small-town fire chief and his working wife that is on the rocks. Impeccably plotted, it is a stirring presentation of the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the power of God’s amazing grace.
