RED TAILS

"Patriotic Courage and Sacrifice"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

RED TAILS is a rousing war movie honoring the efforts of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American fighter pilots fighting in Europe during World War II. When RED TAILS begins, the Tuskegee Airmen are relegated to minor support duty. Their commander, Col. Bullard, is in Washington lobbying the Pentagon to give his men a chance to make their own contribution to the war effort. Eventually, they get new P51 planes and a chance to escort the B-17 bombers flying behind enemy lines. As this plays out, the movie focuses on the fighter pilots flying the missions, including a hotshot pilot, Joe Little, and their immediate superior, Major Stance.

RED TAILS is an exciting, inspiring, well-acted war movie honoring these brave pilots. RED TAILS shows the Christian faith of several men. Just before the biggest mission, all the pilots gather and pray in the Name of Jesus Christ. In another scene, RED TAILS shows the white bomber officers toasting the black officers risking their lives to protect them. However, there’s plenty of foul language and a love affair in RED TAILS, so caution is advised for older children under 13.

Content:

(CCC, BBB, PPP, Ro, Pa, LLL, VV, S, N, A, D, M) Very strong Christian, moral, patriotic worldview with many positive references to Jesus and a prayer in the Name of Jesus at an important point, marred by some Romantic rebellion and some pagan immorality and foul language use by the less Christian or Non-Christian characters; about 51 obscenities (mostly “h” words but some “s” and “d” words), five strong profanities, and three light profanities; strong war violence with some blood includes planes explodes, pilots shot with machine gun fire, wings sliced through and planes fall to the ground, bombs explode on buildings, train explodes, men on runways shot and killed, planes on runways bombed, and man is burned badly; no sex scenes but implied fornication as man shown with shirt off in the morning and woman in nightgown is in the same room, woman hugs man with his shirt off, kissing; upper male nudity; alcohol use; smoking; and, man disobeys orders, and racism but rebuked.

More Detail:

RED TAILS is a rousing war movie about the efforts of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American fighter pilots, during World War II in the European Theater. The movie has a strong Christian, patriotic worldview, but there is plenty of PG and PG-13 foul language and a love affair that’s consummated before a marriage proposal is given and accepted.

When RED TAILS begins, the Tuskegee Airmen are relegated to minor support duty bombing trains and roads. Their commander, Col. Bullard (played by Terence Howard), is in Washington lobbying the Pentagon to give his men a chance to make their own contribution to the war effort. Eventually, they get new P51s and a chance to escort the B-17 bombers flying behind the enemy lines. As all this plays out, the movie focuses on the fighter pilots flying the missions, including a hotshot pilot named Joe Little, played by David Oleyowo, and their immediate superior, Major Stance, played by Oscar winner Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Despite a few clunky moments and brief corny dialogue, RED TAILS is an exciting, inspiring, well acted war movie honoring these brave pilots who helped turn the tide during World War II. Their job was to stick by the huge bombers and draw the fire of the Germans away from them. The movie makes the point that this put their lives at extra risk, thereby saving the lives of the 10 men on each bomber saved, all of them white.*

To tell this story, RED TAILS shows the Christian faith of several of the men. It has many positive references to Jesus Christ. One of the heroes is extremely religious and committed to Jesus. Just before the biggest mission in the movie, all the pilots gather around and pray in the Name of Jesus Christ. In another scene, RED TAILS shows the white bomber officers toasting the black officers who risked their lives to protect them.

The biggest negative to RED TAILS is the PG and PG-13 foul language in the script. Also, Capt. Little has an affair with an Italian woman, Maria, played by Daniela Ruah of NCIS: LOS ANGELES, who speaks French and Italian. In one scene, the movie shows Capt. Little standing bare-chested at a window watching the rising sun as Maria sits on a couch in her nightgown. Later, however, he asks Maria to marry him, and she accepts his proposal.
