FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT: A DOCUMENTARY

"The Christian’s Right to Freedom of Speech Against Homosexuality"

What You Need To Know:

FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT is a provocative, in-your-face documentary about Bill Whatcott’s relentless, aggressive stand against homosexuality and for the right of free speech for Christians to speak out against the immorality of homosexuality. There are a variety of interviews with persons on both sides of the issue of homosexuality, such as editors, columnists, Whatcott’s attorney, and other friends as well as nemeses. A second thread of FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT deals with the turmoil of Whatcott’s upbringing, imprisonment, abuse, addiction, suicide attempt, and quest for God. God led Him to salvation and social activism.

FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT packs a lot into each interview segment. It uses editing techniques such as jump cuts and montages of advertisements, signs, photos, and other footage addressing the homosexual lifestyle from the viewpoint of both homosexual supporters and Christians opposing homosexuality. Voiceovers and newspaper clippings covering Whatcott’s fight for the Christian’s freedom of speech and other rights in some pending court decisions are weaved throughout this documentary. Whatcott’s stand for godly morals and righteousness has made him the man the homosexual community loves to hate. Some material in FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT warrants caution for older children.

More Detail:

FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT is a provocative, in-your-face documentary about one man’s relentless and aggressive stand against homosexuality and the right of free speech for Christians to speak out against the immorality of homosexuality in Regina, Edmonton, and surrounding areas of Canada. There are a variety of interviews with persons on both sides of the issue of homosexuality, such as editors, columnists, Bill Whatcott’s attorney, and other friends and nemeses.

A second thread of FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT deals with the turmoil of Whatcott’s upbringing, imprisonment, abuse, addiction, and suicide attempt, his quest for God that led him to salvation, and his social conservative activism. His mom was an alcoholic, so, by age six, Whatcott was living in various foster homes. As a youth, he was in and out of prison and also fell victim to homosexual rape and drug addiction.

As a result of his traumatic experiences, Bill prayed his first prayer to God as he was about to commit suicide by jumping over a bridge. As he prepared to jump, a policeman stopped his car and pleaded with him not to jump. After getting out of prison, Whatcott began to seek to know who God is and then became a Christian.

FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT packs a lot into each interview segment using editing techniques such as jump cuts, montages of scriptures, advertisements, signs, photos, and other footage addressing the homosexual lifestyle and the sentiments of homosexual supporters and Christians opposing homosexuality. The segments also address the rights of Christians. Voiceovers and newspaper clippings that cover Bill’s overturned court decisions and pending Supreme Court decision are weaved throughout this documentary.

The production and artistic quality of FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT is fair to good. In addition, the cinematography of the film is enhanced not only by the aforementioned film editing techniques, but also by the sound design. Sound effects are creatively used during the jump cuts from a talking head interview to live action footage. Instrumental strings or lyrical popular music with a social message are also used effectively to engage listeners and evoke emotion.

Whatcott is not ashamed of the Gospel. Besides the overt themes of homosexuality and God’s law versus man’s free will, the two over-arching themes of FREEDOM OF WHAT?COTT are: no compromise and self-sacrifice. This is clearly evident as Whatcott shares how even his nursing license was suspended for speaking out against the sin in abortion and homosexuality. Some of Bill Whatcott’s main agendas are to promote pro-life, heterosexuality, conservative, moral Christian family values, and freedom of speech for Christians – especially freedom to speak out against homosexuality.

Also, Whatcott endeavors to leave a legacy behind that enables others to see the truth as he stands and gives biblical and medical explanations for why homosexuality or sodomy, as he often calls it, is morally wrong. Whatcott is not afraid to go “against the grain.” His regrettably unpopular stand for godly morals and righteousness in Regina and Edmonton, Canada have made him infamous and the man the homosexual community loves to hate. Although the movie has a strong Christian worldview, it has an acceptability rating of Minus One. Discretion is advised for older children due to a light obscenity and brief nudity, as well as strong homosexual references, including depictions of homosexuals kissing.
