More Detail:

THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE is one of the most brainless, poorly made, sickening, excruciatingly politically correct issue movies ever made. It also takes idiotic, unconvincing, bigoted, extreme-left potshots at death penalty advocates, conservative Christians, the South, Republicans, and President Bush. This is truly one loathsome movie.

Kevin Spacey plays the title role, David Gale, an anti-death penalty advocate who just happens to be a philosophy professor at the University of Texas at Austin, the state capitol. In flashback, Gale tells a skeptical reporter, played by Kate Winslet of TITANIC, how he landed on death row, with only days left until his execution. An alcoholic, Gale was convicted of murdering his colleague, another anti-death penalty advocate who’s played by Laura Linney. Gale proclaims his innocence, even though there is evidence placing him at the crime scene. Slowly, the reporter, and the silly intern accompanying her, discover that Gale just may be telling the truth. Or, is he?

Kevin Spacey stumbles through this role like his character stumbles during the scenes showing his drunken alcoholic stupors. At times, he is so darn serious that he becomes unintentionally laughable. For her part, Kate Winslet plays the stereotypical skeptical journalist with the personality of a harpie. Only Laura Linney seems to preserve some dignity, but then the movie requires her to parade almost fully nude on her character’s kitchen floor in gratuitously gruesome, sickening murder/death scenes.

In his movie, director Alan Parker sets up all the debates over the death penalty as if he were afraid of actually engaging the audience’s intellect. For instance, in one early scene, David Gale debates the governor of Texas, a limp facsimile of George Bush, in a televised interview. Parker gives all the good lines and good-sounding arguments to Gale, so that the Texas governor comes off sounding like an ignorant hick. How convenient!

THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE is also poorly written. The surprise twists advertised in the ads for the movie are all very predictable. The script seems so one-sided, and its cardboard characters so despicable or unsympathetic, that, by the time the clichéd last minute reprieve attempt comes, the average viewer probably will lose interest.

Worst of all, however, perhaps, is that THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE has a humanist agenda or worldview that exploits many liberal Protestants and liberal Roman Catholics’ honest, God-centered convictions against the death penalty. Thus, although David Gale and his friends appear to be atheists, there are shots of anti-death penalty protestors singing a hymn or holding signs referring to God or Jesus Christ. There are also a couple nasty comments about the alleged stupidity of politically conservative Christians and the people in the “Bible Belt” in southern states like Texas. Apparently, only the beliefs of liberal Christians and liberal atheists deserve recognition and respect.

The actors and filmmakers behind this alleged movie should be ashamed of their bigotry, hatred and ignorance. Hopefully, moviegoers will give this movie a lethal injection at the box office.
