CELLULAR

"Deliverance by Cell Phone"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

CELLULAR is a thriller starring Kim Basinger as Jessica Martin, a high school teacher and mom violently kidnapped because of some business of her husband’s. Using a broken phone, she is able to make contact only with a stranger, a surfer type named Ryan, who is running errands and talking on his cell phone. Jessica has to convince Ryan that she is serious and that he is her only hope. It’s easy to sympathize with the characters, as Jessica is a resourceful and tenacious mom trying to save her family, and Ryan is the incredible samaritan who risks his life to save the Martins’.

CELLULAR requires complete suspension of disbelief but is an exciting, fast-paced chase movie. Even though his aim is high, Ryan breaks a few rules. Most of the immoral actions are clearly performed by the bad guys, however. There is nearly constant foul language and light sexual innuendo, which taint the movie’s moral worldview. Audience members looking to poke holes in the story will not enjoy themselves. A better script would have heightened the thrills, because the plot holes and coincidences are sometimes distracting. Still, CELLULAR is quick and fun entertainment.

More Detail:

CELLULAR requires complete suspension of disbelief but is an exciting, fast-paced chase movie. Kim Basinger plays Jessica Martin, a high school teacher and mom violently kidnapped because of some business of her husband’s. Using a broken phone, she is only able to make contact with a total stranger, a young surfer type named Ryan, who is running errands and talking on his cell phone. Jessica has to convince Ryan that she is serious and that he is her only hope for escaping.

As noted above, audience members looking to poke holes in the story will not enjoy themselves, but those who can put down their defenses and get caught up in the story will find genuine suspense. It’s easy to sympathize with the characters, as Jessica Martin is a resourceful and tenacious mom trying to save her family, and Ryan is the incredible samaritan who risks his life to save the Martins. Even though he doesn’t know her, Ryan goes to incredible lengths to help Jessica. Intuitively, he knows that it is his moral obligation to do anything he can.

Even though his aim is high, since the Martins are in fact victims of a cruel plot, Ryan breaks some rules. Crazy circumstances lead him to steal a car, and his reckless driving (to catch up with the kidnappers) leaves a wake of dangerous car wrecks behind him. Most of the immoral actions are clearly performed by the bad guys, however. There is nearly constant foul language in CELLULAR, as might be expected from an action thriller about hostages locked in a struggle with their kidnappers.

A better script would have heightened the thrills, because the plot holes and coincidences are sometimes distracting. Still, CELLULAR is quick and fun entertainment.
