THE CRAZIES

What You Need To Know:

THE CRAZIES is the story of a small town whose water supply is contaminated with a toxin that turns citizens into deranged killers called “crazies.” Town sheriff David and his wife Judy discover the toxin is from a crashed military plane transporting classified biological warfare chemicals. To cover it up, the military swoops into town and roughly captures all the citizens, separating the sick from the well. Eventually, all the citizens are massacred and an atomic bomb is dropped on the city, though David and Judy escape. The whole story is an excuse to see deranged killers battle David and Judy as they kill others in unusual and grisly ways.

THE CRAZIES has a stronger story than most horror movies, and the action is non-stop. However, the story takes huge leaps towards the end, and plausibility is stretched. THE CRAZIES has some positive elements. The town deputy who seems to be infected sacrifices his life so David and Judy can escape. David originally stays to do his duty as sheriff in order to discover what’s happening in town. However, extreme caution is warranted for the violence and foul language.

More Detail:

THE CRAZIES is a the story of a small town whose water supply is contaminated with a toxin that turns the citizens into deranged killers called “crazies.” David, the town sheriff, and his pregnant wife Judy, the town doctor, unravel the mystery to discover that the toxin is from a crashed military plane transporting classified biological warfare chemicals. The chemicals entered the small town’s water supply.

Just as David discovers what’s happening, the military swoops into town and roughly captures all the citizens, tests them for the toxin and separates the sick from the well. Judy is thought to have the toxin, but the tests are skewered because she’s pregnant and doesn’t really have the crazies disease.

David breaks into the holding area and rescues her. They try to make it 20 miles to a truck stop where the “cleared” citizens are being held. This journey takes up most of the movie as they must battle their way through crazies intent on killing anyone they see. When they make it to the truck stop, no one is there and they discover that even the “cleared” citizens have been massacred.

As Judy and David try to get to a large city, a nuclear bomb is dropped on their small town and they are the lone survivors who make it to the city. Though at the final moments of the movie we see that the military is still tracking them and the large city is scheduled to have a “containment.”

THE CRAZIES has a stronger story than most horror movies, and the action is full and non-stop. However, the story takes huge leaps towards the end and plausibility is stretched. The military really massacres all the citizens of a small Iowa town? Then, they drop a nuclear bomb on the town?

As in most horror movies, the story and characters exist to provide a reason to display gory, horrific images, and scenes of people being killed. In that regard THE CRAZIES succeeds.

The “crazies” in town not only are murderers, but they seem to take delight in finding all sorts of grisly, unusual ways to kill people while the military finds very practical and efficient ways to kill people and burn their bodies.

THE CRAZIES has some positive elements. The town deputy who seems to be infected sacrifices his life so that David and Judy can escape. David originally stays to do his duty as sheriff in order to discover what’s going on in town.

Extreme caution is warranted for violence and foul language.
