Kevin Max and Jeff Deyo do a fine job of acting, but the supporting characters are somewhat wooden. The movie has strong production values, especially the great music by Max and Deyo. There are many instances of praying and sermons, though Johnny’s successful evangelist father is a lousy example of a minister of Christ who tells his son, “I thought I taught you not to get caught.” The movie carries a message showing the commercial side of contemporary Christian music and the trappings that come with money and fame.

THE IMPOSTER is the story of Christian rock star Johnny C (played by Kevin Max) whose life is falling apart because his faith is not genuine and somewhere his ministry in music becomes phony. He sings about the love of Jesus but is addicted to drugs and admits to committing adultery.
Johnny is quick with excuses, but eventually his wife can’t take any more of his lifestyle and leaves him. As he gets deeper into drugs, the band fires him, and his life spirals deeper out of control.
Johnny tries to make a solo record, but his addictions still cripple him. He befriends a homeless man who is mentally challenged. Soon, Johnny is living with him out of desperation and eating out of garbage cans.
Johnny finally has enough and sees himself for who he is – the imposter. Through the grace and forgiveness of Jesus, Johnny starts to put his life together, no longer an imposter.

The movie carries a message that shows the commercial side of contemporary Christian music and the trappings that come with money and fame. The movie often says there is no quick fix for the main character and so the story concludes with Johnny taking small steps to learn to walk genuinely with God, though not everything is “tied up in the end” as many Christian movies tend to do.
THE IMPOSTER carries a real message but requires caution for young children.
