HE CALLS ME DAUGHTER filmmaker Rick Altizer opened up about his new documentary, detailing the ways father-daughter relationships can impact a woman’s self-worth and identity.
“As soon as a director finishes a film, he’s unemployed,” Altizer told the Christian Post, referring to the aftermath of the release of documentary SHOW ME THE FATHER. “So I was asking God, ‘What am I supposed to do now?’”
He continued, “I felt the Lord say, ‘I want you to do this for women.’ And my response was, ‘How is that possible? I’m a guy. How am I going to do this?’ But I felt the Lord say, ‘I’ve given you everything you need. Go do it.’”
Altizer began talking to people who could help him shape the documentary and eventually linked up with Rachelle Starr, who founded the Scarlet Hope ministry in 2007. The organization visits strip clubs across the country, bringing women meals and offering support.
“When Rick shared what he wanted to do with the film, to bring light to father wounds and the redemption side of things, I immediately connected with that,” Starr told the Christian Post. “I’ve been seeing this for almost two decades in ministry.”
She continued, “Our culture tries to mask those wounds and fill them with all sorts of things. But that wound can ultimately only be healed by the Father through Jesus.”
In addition to Starr, HE CALLS ME DAUGHTER also features conversations with filmmaker Alex Kendrick, In-N-Out Burger CEO Lynsi Snyder and comedian Chonda Pierce.
“Telling my story has always been part of what I do,” Pierce told the Christian Post of her involvement in the documentary. “But hearing the stories of the other women in this film was powerful…you realize this isn’t just preacher’s daughters or comedians trying to hide their pain. These are CEOs, actresses, college students. Women everywhere.”
Altizer also spoke to Crosswalk about HE CALLS ME DAUGHTER, explaining that these “father wounds” can create “a conflict in your relationship with God.”
“You’re in church, you’re married, you’re staying married, you’re functioning,” he said. “But at the end of the day, you don’t really believe God’s your Father, because you don’t know what that word means, and you’re not seeing yourself as a daughter, because what father and daughter has meant has been so corrupted that it’s difficult for you to process those words — and yet the deepest truth of who you are is daughter, because God is Father first.”
HE CALLS ME DAUGHTER is now playing in select theaters.
