THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES

What You Need To Know:

THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES is an Argentine drama about Benjamin, a former criminal investigator who writes a novel about a 25-year-old murder case. At the time of the case, he also lost his romantic love of his life, Irene. Moving back and forth in time, Benjamin recounts the old case. After having caught the supposed killer, Benjamin must flee the country because of some enemies. He leaves Irene behind, having never confessed his love for her. Now, 25 years later, Benjamin must re-enter the case and encounters not only the murder from long ago but also Irene, his lost love.

THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES is an engaging film that does a good job of combining the romance story with the criminal story. The story tends to drag in places, however, because it turns completely on identifying with the weary main character. There is much negative content with which to be aware. The most prominent is full frontal nudity by both a male and a female character. The movie also has plenty of foul language and no ultimately redeeming message. The movie’s foul language and nudity are excessive and inappropriate.

Content:

(RoRo, B, LLL, VV, SS, NNN, AA, D, MM) Strong Romantic worldview of man longing for a lost love, mixed with some moral elements of trying to bring killer to justice; 51 harsh obscenities and three profanities; graphic rape scene and fist fights; graphic rape scene and discussion of sex, and adultery; full frontal female and rear nudity, full frontal male nudity, naked female corpse graphically shown; drinking and drunkenness; smoking; and, lying.

More Detail:

THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES is a drama about Benjamin, a former Buenos Aires criminal investigator who retires but cannot get closure over a 25-year-old case. He decides to write a novel about those years, which also involve the loss of his romantic interest, his boss Irene.

The story moves backwards and forwards in time as Benjamin recounts the old case which involved the rape and murder of a young woman. Benjamin doggedly pursues the case with his alcoholic partner. Together, they manage to put the suspect in jail.

This boosts Benjamin’s confidence, and he is about to reveal his feelings for Irene. But then, enemies of Benjamin who are part of the Argentina secret police come for him, and he must flee the country. He leaves Irene behind, having never confessed his love for her.

Now, 25 years later, Benjamin must re-enter the case, which brings up old memories. He finds that he must encounter not only the murder from long ago but also his never forgotten love, Irene.
