The SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is eyeing an opening weekend pull of over $350 million at the global box office as it looks to build on the success of the first movie.
“Mario and Luigi, the twin plumbers, apply their ‘let’s-a-go’ attitude to solve everyday problems all over their new home of the Mushroom Kingdom,” a synopsis of the movie reads. “As they support Princess Peach, and work to reform a miniaturised imprisoned Bowser, they meet a new companion – Yoshi. Princess Peach’s birthday party sparks a galactic adventure, sending the brothers into space to stop Bowser Jr.’s wicked ambitions and save Rosalina. The addition of the beloved characters Rosalina and Bowser Jr. adds extra spice of big action, comedy, and some shocking revelations to the adventure!”

The movie is aiming for a domestic release of $180 million with a global box office haul north of $350 million. The first movie in the franchise opened to $146 million domestically before eventually eclipsing $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office. The first movie connected with audiences through a funny, moral story, something the second movie delivers as well. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is a funny, eye-popping series of rousing set pieces. It has an amazing variety of colorful, fantastic sets and characters. There’s some intense action violence, scary moments and scary creatures, however. THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE has a strong moral worldview with some redemptive content. It stresses good overcoming evil, helping others and doing the right thing. The movie also promotes strong bonds between sisters and brothers. Finally, Luigi and eventually Mario express love for their enemies. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger and older pre-teenage children because of the intense action violence and scary parts in THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE.
While the second movie will introduce more characters from the mario franchise, it will also set the stage for multiple other Nintendo-based movies as characters from numerous other franchises are introduced. One of these characters are Pikmin, a lesser-known Nintendo franchise that has been seen alongside most of Nintendo’s famous characters throughout the years.
“It really stems back to 20 years ago when we did a presentation where it starts off with, there’s a Pikmin next to you,” said Nintendo’s VIP, Shigeru Miyamoto. “In Nintendo there’s sort of like an unwritten rule. Mario needs to stay in the Mario universe, or Splatoon needs to stay in Splatoon, and we don’t use different characters in the same place. But Pikmin has this kind of unwritten rule where they’re okay to appear with other characters.”
THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is in theaters now and promises to deliver another entertaining experience for Nintendo fans of all ages.
