Her experience begins one spring day when she arrives at the hunting lodge with two older friends, Hugo and Luise, and their dog Lynx. Her friends take a drive to the nearby village, but never return. The next morning, the woman decides to hike to the village herself, but runs into a mysterious invisible wall. She finds a pregnant cow and two kittens. Eventually, the woman comes to terms with her situation. She becomes a close hunting companion to the dog. She also plants potatoes each spring. However, a tragedy waits, and the movie ends on a depressing, hopeless note.

More Detail:

THE WALL is an Austrian movie with English narration about a woman who mysteriously finds herself cut off from the rest of the world. The story is based on an acclaimed 1963 novel, but it becomes extremely depressing, with a strong humanist worldview.

The story takes place in flashback as a nameless Austrian woman writes what’s happened to her over the last three years in an isolated hunting lodge in the mountains. Her experience begins one spring day when she arrives at the hunting lodge with two older friends, Hugo and Luise, and their dog Lynx. Her friends take a drive to the nearby village to get some things, but they never return.

The next morning, the woman decides to hike down to the village herself. However, on the path to the village, she runs into an impenetrable see-through wall. Eventually, she follows the wall to a nearby lodge, where two elderly people stand frozen in death beyond the wall.

In time, the woman comes to terms with her situation. She finds a pregnant cow, whom she names Bella, and two kittens. At first, she didn’t get along with the dog, Lynx, but eventually they become fast companions and hunting partners. Meanwhile, the woman plants potatoes each spring.

The white kitten stands out too much in the woods, so a predator eventually kills her, but the woman remains happy, because she expected that to happen. Another tragedy waits, however, and the movie ends in despair and hopelessness.

THE WALL has some uplifting moments, especially between the woman and the dog, and the woman sometimes writes eloquently of life, love, and nature. However, the ending is depressing, hopeless, and, ultimately, godless.
