FIST FIGHT

What You Need To Know:

FIST FIGHT is a ridiculously crude comedy that’s as dumb as the title. On the last day of high school, the students start playing pranks and practical jokes, and the whole public school is out of control. Andy Campbell is a soft-spoken English teacher whose pregnant wife is about to give birth to their second child. Another teacher at the school is Ron Strickland, a strict, angry man whom students fear. When Andy inadvertently gets Ron fired because Ron lost his temper, Ron challenges Andy to a fight in the parking lot after school. Andy spends the next few hours trying to find a way to get out of the fight.

FIST FIGHT has a silly storyline that’s poorly constructed and only funny in a few instances. The movie’s worldview is despicable, endorsing violent behavior and vulgar situations. One teacher continually flirts with an 18-year-old student and makes extremely crude, explicit statements. The comments are supposed to be jokes, but they come off as incredibly disturbing. The whole movie is abhorrent, with constant foul language. FIST FIGHT has no positive qualities whatsoever.

More Detail:

FIST FIGHT is a ridiculously crude comedy that’s about as smart as the title suggests.

On the last day of school, the students start playing pranks and practical jokes, and the whole public school is out of control. Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) is a soft-spoken English teacher who’s expecting a call from his pregnant wife who’s about ready to give birth to their second child. Another teacher at the school is Ron Strickland (Ice Cube), a tough, strict, angry man whom students fear.

The school is forced to make cutbacks and starts firing teachers. This is something Andy can’t have happen with a baby on the way.

When the students push Mr. Strickland over the edge with their pranks, he lashes out and destroys a student’s desk with an axe, which Andy witnesses. Principle Tyler says one of them has to confess, or they both will lose their job. So, Andy reveals that Ron had destroyed the desk and gets him fired.

Angered by this betrayal, Ron says Andy will have to pay the consequences for betraying him. He challenges Andy to a fist fight in the parking lot after school.

A small man who’s never been in a fight, Andy spends the next few hours trying to find a way to get out of it.

FIST FIGHT has a silly storyline that’s poorly constructed, and only funny in a few instances. Only some of the actors offer their comedic talents, such as Charlie Day as Andy and Tracy Morgan as the school’s coach. Ice Cube only manages to be funny by default because of the context of his character, but the inclusion of Christina Hendricks as the drama teacher is painfully unfunny. Roughly inspired by the 1987 movie THREE O’CLOCK HIGH, FIST FIGHT fails mostly because the humor can’t move beyond trivial sexual jokes, tons of obscenities and violent situations.

FIST FIGHT’s worldview is utterly despicable, endorsing violent behavior and vulgar situations. One teacher continually flirts with an 18-year-old student and makes the most crude and sexually explicit statements. These comments are supposed to be jokes, but they come off as incredibly disturbing. The teacher played by Ice Cube threatens students with an axe, and somehow in the end still ends up with a job. The whole movie is abhorrent, and has no positive qualities whatsoever.
