What You Need To Know:

ESCAPE PLAN 2: HADES is a sequel to the 2013 movie ESCAPE PLAN. It stars Sylvester Stallone as Ray Breslin, a skilled expert trained to test the security of prisons by escaping them. Breslin runs an elite team of security specialists when a few teammates are captured by an unknown enemy and imprisoned in a secret, high-tech prison called Hades. With help from a friend, Breslin must rescue his teammates and escape his toughest prison yet. What will he discover when he’s inside Hades about the enemies who created it?

ESCAPE PLAN 2 is full of action and mystery, which at times can be interesting. However, those rare moments of entertainment are almost entirely overwhelmed by a bad, boring script with huge plot holes. The movie is very violent, with several brutal beatings and fight scenes, plus lots of foul language. The worldview is mixed, with strong immoral behavior combined with moral, redemptive elements. For example, Breslin cares about his team and is willing to sacrifice everyone to care about the people he loves. Extreme caution is advised for ESCAPE PLAN 2.

More Detail:

ESCAPE PLAN 2: HADES is a DVD sequel to the 2013 movie ESCAPE PLAN. It stars Sylvester Stallone and Dave Bautista. The movie’s occasionally entertaining elements are overwhelmed by a poor script, some boring execution and bad performances.

Stallone stars, once again, as Ray Breslin, a high skilled operative trained to test prison security systems by breaking out of them — no matter how complex or strong. In the beginning of ESCAPE PLAN 2, Breslin is running a team of security specialists. He’s passing on his unique brand of wisdom and special training to a new generation of operatives.

However, things come to a halt when a member of Breslin’s team, Shu Ren (Xiaoming Huang), is mysteriously kidnapped and locked away in a secret, high-tech prison called Hades. Now, Breslin and his team must rescue their kidnapped comrade before he’s broken by Hades.

Inside the prison, Shu Ren searches desperately for a way to escape. However, the high-tech systems in Hades always seem to be one step ahead of him. Prisoners in Hades are forced to fight almost daily for a chance at two hours in the “Sanctuary.”

The plot thickens when more and more members of Breslin’s team are taken to Hades. With the help of an old friend, Trent DeRosa (Dave Bautista), Breslin develops a plan to get into Hades, but will he be able to get out?

ESCAPE PLAN 2 has a few entertaining scenes. Watching Shu Ren develop a plan for escape is perhaps the movie’s best part. There are also some mildly interesting action sequences. Overall, though, ESCAPE PLAN 2 is just simply bad. It fails in its attempts at humor, intrigue and mystery. A bad script is the main culprit, full of major inconsistencies and several holes. Also, the plot is very hard to follow, and scenes leap from place to place without much overt connection. Stallone carries his own as usual, and Huang’s performance is actually the best in the movie. However, poor performances by Bautista and Wes Chatham really hurt the story.

The worldview in ESCAPE PLAN 2 is mixed. There are serious issues of immorality and violence, but they are balanced by Breslin’s unique personal commitments, including self-control, patience, and love of friends. These are very moral, redemptive beliefs and help add a positive message to what might be an otherwise concerning movie. Breslin is willing to do anything to help his friends, even risking his own life. Breslin and his team are justified in their fight against the prison’s evil warden, the main “bad guy,” who is especially greedy, proud and cruel. His prison is designed to torture inmates and turn them into animals. Therefore, there is a sense of moral justice in Breslin’s crusade to bring down the prison.

“Hades,” the name of the prison, is a religious reference. However, the movie never implies that any of the characters take the ancient Greek religion seriously.

ESCAPE PLAN 2 contains high levels of violence strong foul language. Its plot is weak and full of immorality. Extreme caution is advised.
