Pop Star Madonna Says Giving Cell Phones to Her Children Too Early Was a Mistake

By Tess Farrand, Staff Writer

“It ended my relationship with them, really. Not completely,” the pop star stated, “but it became a very, very big part of their lives.”

Madonna is no stranger to the spotlight or public controversy for that matter, but the hailed “Queen of Pop” is making statements that will resonate with plenty of parents. In British VOGUE’s latest issue, Madonna opened up about her public and private life and revealed a mistake she made: giving her children cell phones too early.

“They became too inundated with imagery and started to compare themselves with other people, and that’s really bad for self-growth,” she rightly says.

Several studies have shown this. For example, a previous Movieguide® article states, “On average, children are exposed to over 60,000 hours of media by the time they are 17-years-old.” Some posit that children’s brains are altered when they have too much screen time.

Madonna is a mother of six children ranging from 22 years old to 6 years old. VOGUE mentions that Madonna “has already banned adopted [her 6-year-old] son David from having [a cell phone].” The “Vogue” singer plans to hold fast to that decision saying, “I’m going to stick that one out for as long as possible because I made a mistake when I gave my older children phones when they were 13.”

One Instagram quote ironically put it this way: “Stop scrolling. Start strolling.” Imagine a world where instead of texting during dinner, we actually made conversation with one another. Imagine if we read our bibles as much as we were on social media… We long for connection, but sadly, live in such a lonely world.

If you find yourself in need of good news on a daily basis that refutes loneliness and all the negativity in this present age, thankfully the Gospel provides just that. Next time you reach for your phone looking to connect, remember what the bible states in Matthew 28:20. “…behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age (ESV).”

Rest on that beautiful truth today!
