AT&T Exempts HBO Max From Data Cap That Still Applies to Other Streaming Services

By Allyson Vannatta, Senior Writer

HBO Max, AT&T’s new streaming service, will exempt it from the carrier’s mobile data caps. However, that’s not the case with Netflix, Amazon or Disney+.

HBO Max launched just a week ago, adding its content to the ever-growing list of streaming services available to consumers.

However, it hasn’t been smooth sailing.

Movieguide® previously reported that the biggest issue with the new platform is the confusion on where audiences can watch it.

Right now, in order to stream HBO Max, consumers have to have a third-party streaming device to watch it on their televisions or have a smart TV with the HBO app directly on it.

This technicality is making it difficult and tiresome to invest in yet another platform to consume content.

Sadly, HBO Max also doesn’t offer much content for families to enjoy, which could also impact the number of subscriptions.

In a possible effort to encourage audiences to subscribe, AT&T is exempting data caps when streaming the service on a mobile device.

This news was confirmed to The Verge by AT&T stating that HBO Max is excused from the “traditional data caps and the soft data caps on unlimited plans.”

HBO Max will instead use the company’s “sponsored data” system. This “allows any company to pay to excuse its services from data caps.”

Since AT&T owns HBO Max, though, the company is essentially paying itself.

Arstechnica followed up with AT&T after their comment to The Verge and asked the company if HBO Max will also be exempt from home-internet data caps as well.

AT&T responded saying “The new streaming service is not exempt from home-Internet caps, so ‘HBO Max would count toward your home data allotment.’”

AT&T owns Warner Bros., where HBO Max is getting tons of content for their service with new additions expected in the months to follow.
